The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the 80/LX450 series tech section continues to be a work in progress. The goal is to have links in the below to other threads and tech articles. By having these linked, instead of pasting the text, the threads will remain live. The live threads can continue to be updated and/or modified for things such as part numbers, adding on additional insight or after a period of time, some follow up information.
These FAQs have been put together by FORUM members. They have put extensive time and research into them. So when you find yourself using them, it would not be a bad thing to send off a thank you.
Again, these will continue to be updated and we will continue to add new ones as we move forward. If you have an idea for a new faq, or would like to take ownership of pulling one together, then don't be shy about it, you'll be helping everyone

Technical Acronyms:

A343F = Automatic transmission used in LC's from 95-97

A442F = Automatic transmission used in LC's from 93-94 AKA "the bus tranny", Also some diesels from 95-98

A440F = Automatic transmission used in LC's from 88-92 (Non-electronically controlled predecessor/version of the A442F)

ABS - Acronym for Anti-lock Braking System. This system uses a computer to control your brakes on your car by applying and releasing your brakes quickly to prevent skidding or sliding from occuring.

ALT - Alternator: power generator for automobiles

ARB - australian 4x4 accessories manufacturer

AT - Automatic Transmission

AT - (tires) All Terrain

ATF - Automatic Transmission fluid

BIRF - Birfield: Found in the front axles of our rigs; they are constant velocity joints that transmit power through variable angles, at constant velocities.

CEL - check engine light, sometimes refers tocode that cuased light that can be read by a code reader

CDL Switch- Center Differential Lock Switch- Switch installed to allow the Center Differential to be locked when the transfer case is in High. The actual Center Differential Lock is in the Transfer Case.

DS- Driver's side

DS: Drive Shaft=shafts that carry power and torque from the engine/tranny/xfer case to the axles.

DC DS=Double Cardan Drive Shaft=a pair of joints in a drive shaft that allows the tube to move in various directions and angularities.

Diffs - Differentials: found in the front and rear axles that consists of gears that transmit equal power and torque even if they rotate at different speeds.

ECT - Electronically Controlled Transmission - allows the engine to rev to a higher rpm before shifting to the next gear. Basically changes the shift points for the transmission. (Best for towing or heavier loads)

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve

EWD or WD - Electrical Wiring Diagram, (part of FSM set)

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

FHH = Firewall Heater Hose

FJ80 - An 80 series Land Cruiser powered by a 3FE engine.

FSM - Factory Service Manual. The "bible" as published by the manufacturer. Used to guide in repairs

FZJ80 - An 80 series Land Cruiser powered by the vastly superior (

) 1FZ-FE engine.

HDJ80 - An 80 series Land Cruiser powered by a 1HD-T turbocharged diesel engine.

HDJ81 - Japan Domestic Market HDJ80

HG - Head Gasket

HZJ80 - An 80 series Land Cruiser powered by a 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel engine.

HZJ81 - Japan Domestic Market HZJ80

IAC = Idle Air Control solenoid

JDM- Japan Domestic Market- Refers to items particular to vehicles manufactured and sold in the Japanese market.

Items include but are not limited to:
Power retracting mirrors
Dual air conditioning
Adjustible shocks
Winches
and various cool and some gawdy accessories.

LB/FT - pound feet of torque

LB/IN - pound inches of torque

LHD (Left-Hand Drive): steering wheel on the left side, driving on the right side of the road

LSPV - Load Sensing Proportioning Valve

MAF - Mass air flow sensor

MIL - Malfunction Indicator Light (same as a CEL)

M&S - (tires) Mud and Snow

MT - Manual Transmission

MT - (tires) Mud Terrain

NA - Naturally Aspirated - An engine that is not turbocharged nor supercharged

OBDII - On Board Diagnostics Port available on ALL cars sold in the US 199 and later. Allows a common intercface tool to be connected to read and reset engine fault codes (CEL). Many Autpart stores will read your code for free vs. paying the dealer.

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer. (Toyota in this case)

OME - Old Man Emu. An Australian four wheel drive specialty manufacturer that makes all kinds of cool stuff that causes us to empty our billfolds.

PCV Valve - The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is an emissions control device that routes unburned crankcase blowby gases back into the intake manifold where they can be reburned.

PHH - Pesky Heater Hose. A 100 mm length of 16mm (5/8 inch) straight heater hose located at the extreme LH rear corner of the 1FZ engine cylinder head. So named because it is not the easiest thing to change-out even under ideal conditions.

PI - Propane Injection - Propane is injected into the intake as a diesel catalyst for a more complete burn and additional power

PM - preventive mantenance

PM - private message

PO - Previous owner

POS - Piece of S#1T

PS- Passenger side

PSI - Pounds per square inch - A measure,emt of pressure.

RHD (Right-Hand Drive): steering wheel on the right side, driving on the left side of the road.

RPM - Rotations Per Minute

SOA - Sprong Over Axle - A suspension lift for a leaf (Vs 80 series coil) spring suspension. It places the leaf springs on top of the axle vs the bottom.

SC or S/C = Supercharger/Supercharged

SSM - Special Service Materials

SST - Special Service Tools

SUA = Spring under axle. Stock configuration for a Leaf (80's use Coil)Spring Vehicle (vs. SOA previously mentioned).

TB - Throttle Body: controls air flow into engine system in response to gas pedal depression.

TC or T/C = Turbocharger/Turbocharged

TLCA - Toyota Land Cruiser Association (tlca.org) - The Toyota Land Cruiser Association (TLCA) is a 4 wheel drive organization open to all Toyota 4 wheel drive vehicles (except sedan types). This includes all models of Land Cruisers, 4Runners, and 4x4 trucks.

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor, may also be the "kick down" cable

USDS- US driver's side or the left-hand side of the vehicle.

USPS - US passenger side or the right-hand side of the vehicle.

VSV - Vacuum Switching Valve. An electrically controlled valve that diverts vacuum according to the position of the switch.

xfer=Transfer case: sits behind transmission, has front and rear drive shafts coming out of it, and distributes power from the transmission to the front and rear differentials/axles.

This section deals with the common and not so common modifications many forum members have completed.

The first set of modifications people do have to do with Lifts:

Here is a thread were members posted info on their lifts, castor and drive shafts.
Also with the installation of lifts, noises and grinding can occur due to the different pinion angles. Using the Vehicle Computer Codes to help Diagnose problems
If you have a 96 or newer vehicle you have an OBDII diagnostic port. You can eitehr buy a code reader or got to one of the many autoparts stores that will pull the code for you. The code will then tell you what the computer has logged as a fault. The nice thing about OBDII, is the code reader will work on ALL vehicles made 1996 and up.

If you have a 91-95 Land Cruiser, you can still pull the code with the paperclip method:

In addition, you can pull the TCM code. A TCM code is where your o/d light is flashing and pertains directly to the transmission only

To identify the code

1. get a metal paperclip or jumper wires

2. switch the o/d button on

2. go to the DTC output box on the fireall of the engine (small black plastic box with a pop up lid which may be labelled "DLC1". lift the lid. You should see two small grids of 3x3 contacts and the inside of the lid should have a label code. identify the E1 and TT contacts.

3. turn ignition on

4. go back to the DLC box and insert one end of the paper clip in the E1 hole and one end in the TT hole. BE CAREFUL AND DO NOT GUESS ON THIS. If you don't have ther label code post up in the forum

5. go back inside and watch the o/d light flash pattern.

if it blinks continually in 2 second intervals you no longer have a problem so just pull the 10 amp dome fuse to clear the code

6. otherwise count the flashes to get a 2 digit code. the flash sequences are sapareted by a 1.5 second pause. If there are 2 codes there will be a 2.5 second pause between each fresh code.

7. remove the paper clip. turn truck off.

8. post your codes in the forum or look up in the FSM to decipher.

PCV Valve - The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is an emissions control device that routes unburned crankcase blowby gases back into the intake manifold where they can be reburned. PHH - Pesky Heater Hose. A 100 mm length of 16mm (5/8 inch) straight heater hose located at the extreme LH rear corner of the 1FZ engine cylinder head. So named because it is not the easiest thing to change-out even under ideal conditions. PI - Propane Injection - Propane is injected into the intake as a diesel catalyst for a more complete burn and additional power PM - preventive mantenance PM - private message PO - Previous owner POS - Piece of S#1T PS- Passenger side PSI - Pounds per square inch - A measure,emt of pressure. Try this Timing Advance Instructions from Safari4x4.com Using the Vehicle Computer Codes to help Diagnose problems If you have a 96 or newer vehicle you have an OBDII diagnostic port. You can eitehr buy a code reader or got to one of the many autoparts stores that will pull the code for you. The code will then tell you what the computer has logged as a fault. The nice thing about OBDII, is the code reader will work on ALL vehicles made 1996 and up. If you have a 91-95 Land Cruiser, you can still pull the code with the paperclip method: To be supplied In addition, you can pull the TCM code. A TCM code is where your o/d light is flashing and pertains directly to the transmission only Originally Posted by semlin To identify the code 1. get a metal paperclip or jumper wires 2. switch the o/d button on 2. go to the DTC output box on the fireall of the engine (small black plastic box with a pop up lid which may be labelled "DLC1". lift the lid. You should see two small grids of 3x3 contacts and the inside of the lid should have a label code. identify the E1 and TT contacts. 3. turn ignition on 4. go back to the DLC box and insert one end of the paper clip in the E1 hole and one end in the TT hole. BE CAREFUL AND DO NOT GUESS ON THIS. If you don't have ther label code post up in the forum 5. go back inside and watch the o/d light flash pattern. if it blinks continually in 2 second intervals you no longer have a problem so just pull the 10 amp dome fuse to clear the code 6. otherwise count the flashes to get a 2 digit code. the flash sequences are sapareted by a 1.5 second pause. If there are 2 codes there will be a 2.5 second pause between each fresh code. 7. remove the paper clip. turn truck off. 8. post your codes in the forum or look up in the FSM to decipher. The goal is to have links in the below to other threads and tech articles. By having these linked, instead of pasting the text, the threads will remain live. The live threads can continue to be updated and/or modified for things such as part numbers, adding on additional insight or after a period of time, some follow up information. These FAQs have been put together by FORUM members. They have put extensive time and research into them. So when you find yourself using them, it would not be a bad thing to send off a thank you.
