Loving the cage! You are giving me some great ideas. The idea that I like the best is having you come over here in a few months, and bring your bender. Ha.

What bender are you using with what die? What size tube are you using for your A pillar?

Wow. Nice cage. I can only dream about being that talented.

I put a cage in my 76 around 1980 or so. Probably ordered the 3 piece kit from Man A Fre or maybe Downey long ago.

Never realized i couldnt lower windshield until i welded it up. Lol

I never put the windshield down anyway.

Another slight problem was climbing in. Very little room between bottom of front downtube and the seat.

I got used to it though.

That sounds like a good idea lol.

I'm running my Rouge Fab M625 bender for all of this. Material is 1.75" .120 wall on a 6.5" CLR die.

Great bender for this. Highly recommend, but it is a bit expensive. Super user friendly with the clamp blocks and repicablility though.

This looks like a nice bender. I’m thinking about replacing my bender and I’m looking at this or the JD2. Would you get the same radius dies or would you go with 4.5”?

You could go with either, the bend deformation will increase on the smaller die, I'm around 6% on the 6.5" CLR die when I last checked. I wouldn't personally go much smaller with the deformation. It all depends on the ratio of the tubing wall thickness to the dia.

What about bending and beating steel into place to make a steel upper dash pad that isn't actually connected to the dash? Upholster that, so it's slightly less skull crushing and you're not losing much space?

You could get creative with interior lighting and be able to mount things to it as well.

The Toyota dash pad is mediocre quality at best and expensive AF anyways.

I am just guessing but I think DJ knows a place that has some Toyota parts . I could be wrong though .

Sure. I just shook his hand in the shop the other day. He likes the look. He wants more structure. It'd be pretty trick if that was semi hidden.

You can still get dash pads from Toyota. But they ain't great. I've got a new one in the box waiting for paint.

I'm just here to produce bad ideas. 😆

Anytime you need a “practice” rig for fab and design ideas on I’ll offer mine up free of charge 😎

I've often thought about mountain the cage to the dash next to the glove box and speedometer. I might do that someday myself. Do whatever you want though despite what other people say.

I was going to tie into the a pillar most of the way with the new design. It's definitely a weak spot in this cage, but I also hope to never have to use it.

Lol, I get too much practice at work. It kinda takes over my life too much 🙃

More cage stuff.

I want this cage to be strong, yet open enough to be useable and not in the way of everyday use. I had some super good discussions with Mike @Godfather90 about how to adequately support and triangulate this cage while keeping that in mind. Anyways, here is what we came up with.

My inital idea.

My problem with this is that you can't climb though the vehicle, and it starts to get in the way of the rear passenger foot room.

Mike came up with the "A". It supports crush loads and some side loading well, and it keeps everything a lot more open.

With that, I had to make new B pillar feet, because they wont be able to come out of the tub since you can't pull the legs together with the new bars.

I also added some handles in the top for the rear passengers.

These roll back about 4" to the rear of the vehicle to add some more head room and the ability to tilt the seats back a bit more.

And then I added some handles to the front.
