On the road: The tires are waaaay quieter than I expected. I've read that others reported that these are a quiet mud tire and that's exactly what I found. I hear the mechanical symphony from the 40 over any tire noise...
Agree with diamond plate…. 50 years ago in Vermont I remember a few FJ40’s where the rear quarter diamond plate covered huge body holes eaten away from salt.
Speedo cable looks way too long. Routed and wire tied to the torque tub. It's a 77 but roll bar not sure has the right side bars. The the back radius was sharper for the handle for the vent window. The diamond plate is a big red flag for me...
the front anti inversion shackles are backwards they won’t work that way. i agree with some of the typical oil leaks. depends on the price and how it’s running it looks like a sold place to start if you don’t plan on a full on restoration. if...
Rear driveshaft is out of phase and need a 4° shime to lower the pinion output, it is like this because of the longer rear shackles used when you do a shackle reversal ( it lift the front 1.5")
Nice 77-78 , Old style advance handling shackle reversal , no skid plate , look like a rear pinion leak , maybe t-case output too , the hole on the frame is the torque tube (crossmember) you can see the muffler look like it go to the back
Get the upgraded axles Kurt talks about in his post. You might get lucky on the axles and find a later model set (1/79 or later) with the better gear ratio (3.70) if this is going to mainly be a highway Cruiser? I would swap the thirds around...

Speaking of 1976...I bought a 1976 Piper Archer II today and flew it home from Southeastern Colorado. This thing has never seen rain and only has 1,800 hours on the airframe. Original paint. Immaculate. I love these machines.
Hoping to get the...
Anything shorter than 4" shackles on the rear and there's a good chance the rear spring eye will decide to bottom out on the spring hanger.
Unless you don't leave pavement.
Is there an ideal shackle length for the 4” SJ lift? I currently have 5.25” Confer shackles with the crossbar. I would like to use a shorter shackle to reduce height some and possibly remove a leaf. They were originally over tighten by PO. Any...
