I had a FJ73 with a carb'd 3F engine. Fortunately where I live, emissions testing was not required and still isn't. It would have failed badly if that was the case!! Had the same amount of "spaghetti" as you too.

The guy who owns it now lives in AZ but I think he lives in an area like myself where testing isn't done. Is there some way you could do your registration and inspection in a such area? Legally of course.

If I owned property in another area of the State, then yes.
 
Is it cost-prohibitive to install some emissions control equipment to pass testing? I am willing to bet that registering out of state is unlawful. If my chemistry serves me right (which honestly, it never has), a catalytic converter is one tool for reducing NOX and hydrocarbon

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm going to weld in a catalytic converter and do a solid tune-up and lean-drop tune the carb. It's detailed a bit more in the thread I started in the 60-series section. If you search the 60-series section there are guys who've had success with aftermarket catalytic converters... after having de-smogged their truck (removed the EGR and air pump).
 
Exercise caution installing a cat on a vehicle that didn't have one in the first place. It is quite likely that the cat will be dealing with a lot more unburned fuel than it is meant to handle. This could result in excessive heat, enough to be potentially dangerous.
 
I got my UAE imported 1990 FJ75 to pass emissions in Portland, OR.
Welded in a Cat, leaned the carb, and bumped the idle up. Passed with flying colors.

note: I did have a new exhaust installed as well 2.5" after the headers.

That is promising to hear. Were you able to keep that stuff installed, or was it no bueno?

I am curious to hear how much simple emissions control modifications compromise performance. I know we all complain about additional components adding more failure points, but it sure would be cool to make these adjustments and see little change in performance, all the while polluting a little less.
 
Well, since the troopy didn't come with any emissions equipment, I'm not sure my engine performance (3F lol) hasn't suffered by adding a Cat. I can still chirp the tires going into 2 gear when the back is empty. Has enough power for now.


My carb is pretty dirty, once I rebuild it, it should hopefully perform better and stop the slight sputtering I hear from the exhaust. ( had it before the carb as well )

Did you follow the FSM to lean out the carb? How'd you adjust the idle mixture screw? Mine isn't a screw... do you have an SST?

Also, was your emissions test a rolling test or just a tailpipe sniff?
 
Hey there, followed the FSM to lean it out. Did the lean drop method and added a half turn extra. This was right before driving into the DEQ Testing.

My Carb has a idle mixture screw so i just bumped it up to about 1000 - 1200rpm. It was obviously running too fast for a parked vehicle, but no one noticed.... so it passed. Its a parked idle test with an exhaust probe.

I've heard people use ISO HEET and a bunch of other alcohol additives to help pass the test. I bought a few bottles of HEET, but kept it as a backup plan. Never had to use them.

And I have been keeping an eye on this. I bought an IR temp reader. So far the catalytic converter hasn't been running any hotter than the exhaust pipe upstream of it... the muffler was hotter than the cat when I checked yesterday after a long drive.
 
Interesting. Maybe dremel a slot onto the Idle mixture screw ? Then just use a flat head screwdriver.

I'm working on a solution to be able to adjust it.

I seem to recall that some of the Ferraris I used to work on had an aluminum cap on their idle/mixture adjuster(anti-tampering). I had a real cool tiny slide hammer that I welded a self tapping screw to....drill a hole, screw it in, pop it out.

Hard to tell if that is a plug or something else....

GCC spec Cruisers have that type of idle mixture screw. It requires a SST for adjustment. Part number is 09243-00020.

General market specification carburetors have a flat screw.

That tool is discontinued... though I did manage to track one down and it's in the mail to me now.

In the meantime, classic car insurance made my emissions woes go away for now.

Nice! I have A/C repairs on the list for mine as well. I'll be following this. I know my AC clutch is probably done for. I don't know if my compressor is good, even though it still appears to have some sort of a charge.
