These are spare gears that came with my second '75 2F. However, the shifter was removed and they appear to have been stored outside, exposed. When I pulled the drain plugs, I got tons of clear water; in both the transmission and, to my surprise, the transfer case. So, I spend the afternoon pulling the transfer case off of the transmission and having a look at the contents. So far, not much more than rusty gear oil in the H42. Maybe some ice deforming the sheet metal transmission side cover. There is a recent leak of gear oil at the transfer case brake drum. I'd be really amazed if these can be rebuilt, but that is what I'm aiming to do.

Added a little bling to the repainted fender before mounting.
On another note, how the F do these bug catcher windows install?
*goes into research mode*

Lifted my 69. OME (light) with 2.5" HFS shackles. Didn't fight me at all taking the old suspension out. As many of these as I have done, it is still a long day working alone. Very happy with the result. Never used the HFS shackles before but am definately a fan (super beefy). Road tested today with little drama. I'm very happy!

@Dirtygumboots yes they keep “thinning” the Forest up here in Prescott. If you can’t handle a Forest Fire, you should not move to the area. Doing it in many places that are no where near roads or houses. It clearly is NOT about creating defensible space but selling wood products! Laying waste to our Forest more every day and no one seems to care. Only reason I came up here was the Forest otherwise I would have gone to Colorado. I still think of Colorado frequently.....

Don’t worry it’ll all grow back. In 30-40 years there’ll be a forest again ;)

Nice J40, what colour is that?

Colorado is all beetle kill anyway. Come to Utah, we have 3.2 beer and a big stinky lake with no fish in it! :flipoff2:

Got possession of my 1984 BJ40 this week! Lot's in the pipeline to work on but taking my time before she ends up with the restoration team.

Did you end up putting the h55 in it?

It could be worse, in my state they hardly cut anything and wildlife is suffering because there is so little young forest habitat for rabbits, fawns, and birds. It has gotten to the point that our state pays people to cut wood, usually hardwoods like Oak, often leaving it stacked up to rot.

"The partridge or Ruffed Grouse is a bird of the young forest, of thickets and young trees that first grow when a meadow or farm is abandoned. Connecticut’s forests are now too old for Ruffed Grouse and the dozen or so other birds that require young woods for nesting."

Also means far fewer logging roads to drive 40s on :meh:

I got the weather-exposed H42 to shift. It is quite a surprise that the gears seem good on this gearbox, but the top cover needed some persuasion. Once I pulled the it apart and removed the top three balls and springs in the case cover, it started to move. Then I reinstalled the balls and springs with some oil, and I now can select four forward gears plus reverse, really easily.

I'm winging it here with a Haynes manual so I don't understand the alignment and brass drift technique to remove the input shaft bearing. I'm wondering if complete overhaul is really justified to simply perform custodial operations, plus replacement of seals?

Got started on the top cap.
It was covered in old ass carpet headliner leftovers. So I started with 40 grit on a DA sander. That really got the majority of it off.
Then I broke out my grinder with a wire wheel and went to town on the rain gutter. Cleaned up pretty good but definitely some rot going on.
After that I shot it with some red oxide type primer made especially for rust.
Ill get back on it tomorrow and start patching in new metal.
I may try a new method I've been reading about. Using panel bonding adhesives.
Anyhoo, looking forward to getting this last piece of the puzzle finished.

Took the 40 out to the 4 Seasons Hotel here in Abu Dhabi last night... my Emirati business partner and I took our wives out in style. =)

Colorado? You mean California East? Pretty sad to see what Colorado turned and continues to turn into.
