I just went to a glass shop and they cut the glass to fit and install was about $200.

Pretty sure those valves were factory, I’ve taken them out of a bunch of 40’s. I’m not sure the exact purpose but useful for burping the system and draining the in cab heater hose lines/heater cores.

Before I go on - your FJ40 transfer case brake drum can leak from 2 places: Around the drum shaft seal and into the drum body. This is the traditional leak that contaminates the brake shoes. Through the output shaft splines and out around the...

Don’t dwell on the dizzy too much, use the marks on your flywheel for reference.

Hey all - besides a introduction and some pictures of our FJ we got in 2018, this is my first real thread here. Just finally getting around to tearing her down and starting from the ground up. I said that "2021 is the year of getting things...

How time goes by….. With work, vacation and work again it has been a while since my last update. I have been working on a cabinet but pictures of that when finished. This weekend I participated in a forging workshop. Done this before a few...

My bad… I was thinking about it all wrong. You’re correct. Please go with what he stated I was thinking about it backwards.

All the advice regarding leakdown tests, head/block cracked, etc is fine and dandy and likely worst case only, the more obvious and easy thing to check (which is often the culprit) is whether the small freeze plugs in the head or on side of the...

Finally got it done. I have a pics of what I replaced below. I realized that not only had the PO replaced the tank, but they used a tube to connect the gas filling inlet to the tank that wasn’t capable of handling gasoline, so there was...

Just got back from a quick, much needed long weekend to the WV Mtns. Google maps took us through a ranch the long way around. The youngest is now hooked on trout. Now back to the ‘72 this week and see if we can make it closer to done.

And you should check the FSM for the proper orientation of the zerk fittings so that you don't have to remove the driveshaft to lube it.

Thank you sir. Glad you noted that. I was pretty sure that the steering column hadn't been changed out so I did some deeper digging. Checked the vin plate again and the build date is actually Feb of '73 so it stands to reason that the Hi beams...

The ujoints and flanges need to be in the same orientation to each other. If not you will have a vibration.

/\/\/\This/\/\ Compression test, leakdown. Pressure test the cooling system. It's easier to test and diagnose when it's all together. Then you can know where to look, upon disassembly. I think its too much water for condensation from sitting...

I’m with the votes on water in oil due to bad head gasket or some cracked cast iron. If you can, do a compression and a leakdown test before pulling it apart. You can also pressure test the cooling system while it’s all together too. Could help...

I'd just install it. They probably have everything adjusted properly.
    • pb4ugo
I'd probably install the box 1st, then see if anything more needs to be done. Was the box just rebuilt or is this a used box? Either way, I'd figure if it was rebuilt by a rebuilder or used, It was initially setup correctly at some point...

It sounds like you have a later steering column installed. A 72 would have a high/low beam switch on the floor. Later models have it in the column turn switch. Later models also had a separate turn and brake light. 72 would have a...

Shims installed with the thick part forward will increase positive caster and typically track better. Thick part to the back will increase negative caster and will increase wander and twitchiness. I agree with crusiermatt, looks like there's...

it looks like you have a front spring on the rear and a rear spring on the front?
    • pb4ugo
If its off to the negative side, you can install steel caster shims between the axle and spring to rotate the axle. You need to find out what your caster is 1st and then see what your going to need if anything at all.

Yes, angle finder. I find using the lower trunion bearing cap is easier. Dont use the studs or nuts, they could be slightly off. You should be able to catch the edge next to the nuts so that the finder is on the plate. I think, FSM say 1*...

Tires? My FJ40 had some over 20 year old 12.5" wide mud tires, and it behaved like that. Put new 10.5" KO2s on with no other changes and it was like a whole new truck. Of course, then I added a rear lock-rite and it's back to being like that...
