What should I pack that will get me home if something goes wrong? What tool or spare part has saved your butt? Alternately, what do you haul around that you've never used?

Get the basic tools and then figure out from there what you want to carry.

Tools can fit anything, parts not so much. I keep a spare starter, the last hoses/belts/points/cap/wiper blade and the longest spark plug wire that I changed out. I have a new spark plug or two also. Freeze plug in case the block heater blows out again. Pipe plug in case the direct read oil pressure gauge or line fails. Extra lug nuts can be handy. Bulbs and fuses.

Some of us have MVS (Multiple Vehicle Syndrome), which complicates things. Each of my wheeling rigs has its own dedicated set of spare parts, and some basic hand tools. Four advanced bags of tools move from rig to rig. I am always ‘loaded for bear’ and carry stuff like all-thread and steel plates to make things if needed.

Here’s a pic of what I was rolling with in my K5, fourty years ago. Each of my Cruisers carries more than this. :meh:

And yeah, that was the year AFTER I ran the Rubicon in the K5. Blew a power steering hose in the pre-dynamite Little Sluice. I had a spare.😉

Just remembered something else worth sharing. My father was not at all mechanically inclined. I remember as a kid when something went wrong with the family car he would just open the hood in the driveway (which was near the street) and stare at it. Eventually one of the neighbors, ALL of whom were mechanically inclined, would diagnose the problem for him.

So I was surprised in my 30s to find that when it was MY turn to look at his stuff, that he had a good set of tools onboard. I didn’t mince words with him about it, and his straightforward response was that he figured it would be easier for a Good Samaritan to help him if he had the right tools. Someone had coached him.😊

I thought I had a lot of tools and spare parts in my 40. After this thread I feel inadequately prepared.
I wasn’t there to see the first few iterations, but according to @Texican , @KOWBOY had to keep beefing up his truck to handle the weight of all his tools and parts
