Zinc is in Galvy also. Reason for my statement, don't ever weld Galvy without proper respiration! I've done it before and would never touch it now. @ J Mack brings up an excellent point, be careful you never know. Stainless steel is also another 1 depending on how much of it you weld. Be Safe

Great advice as always.

When I was a kid dad & I brazed a sheet of galv into the floor pan of my Baja...I still remember the cloud of yellow-green coming off it and both of us drinking from the shop hose right after to get the horrible taste out

This SEM’s weld primer. Rustoleum makes a version too. Just something to protect the metal between. Always open to better suggestions. I know SEM also makes a Copperweld primer, but I don’t have any experience with it.

i use the upol copper weld thru primer, with great success!

I’ve been using the SEM Copperweld and it is a zinc-based and copper-enriched weld-through primer, just read the SDS and it looks like the solvent used as a carrier is a bigger safety concern than the zinc.

Always best to do your own research when your safety is at risk, all manufactures will list their Safety Data Sheet on their websites or send you one if you request it. I will say that about ten years ago I was helping a friend repair an equipment trailer and we hosed it down with chlorinated brake cleaner unknowingly before welding and about half way through I nearly passed out from the fumes and still suffer from the health effects today.

It’s nice to see guys like @bobm pop in here and share his experience with us. Talented guys with first hand knowledge willing to take their time to help is what makes the sty a great place to hangout.

I've read accounts of guys getting permanent damage and even dying from this practice. The guy who wired my 55 uses brake cleaner for everything, cases of it. The stuff scares me.

I remember reading an article years ago about a guy using brake-clean to clean the area before welding, struck an arc with his TIG torch and a puff of yellowish smoke rose out. He breathed some and it ended up screwing him up for months. I’d never even heard of anyone spraying brake-clean on the area to weld. Not sure why an angle-head sander and some compressed air wouldn’t be sufficient?
That’s like a guy I worked with who sprayed brake-clean on 12v truck batteries. Always seemed like an explosion waiting to happen.

Anyways, on with the build!🧰🔧🔩

Yellow Smoky snots usually float up from welding Galvy its Nasty! Appreciate it @J Mack I think we all have outstanding knowledge to add from our experiences! Hate to see anyone get hurt! I have a feeling from the post that @J Mack posted that guys still suffering 😕. Hexavalent chromium is what comes off of the Stainless. Don't think any of us would Weld enough in our life to be dangerous!! Still pays to be Safe 🤔😉

Got one hanger tacked together and my idea for a mini scab plate.

I plan to do a boxed gusset from outboard edge of hanger up onto scab plate, it’s not big but just something to weld to other than bare frame. Not sure if it needs curved edges or if the taper is good enough :hmm::meh:

Also put my old “concrete drilling” mask on to clean up the removed shock mount with my head in the fender, filters say 09 on them, been off the tools awhile now.

I had bought a layout aid for the drop ceiling in the basement...put it to use in the shop today, no sharks though.

Happy with layout and spacing, next up is fully welding the hangers before tacking them on, will be interesting bending the gussets up- using a vice and hammer with torch for heat.

That looks excellent man! Nice work 👍
Thanks D!

Back out after dinner to run a few practice beads and then welded them up. Added a gusset too.

So next I think I need to weld the scab plates on while I can get a good angle on them, then tack these hangers on and hang springs to check averything before full weld out.
