Thank you Tucker, I like the idea of retro VW bus rack and outside in the sun the paint color on the pig looks a lot different than the photos under the Metal-halide shop lights. Combined with the quirky lines of the 55 and the wood rack it gives the impression its several decades older than it is.

How is the rack attached?

What is on the front, is it lights?

Yes it’s a little Rigid light bar up front.

Looks amazing. The other picture did not have any scale so I didn't know how long it was but I think you nailed the length. Great setbacks.

Thanks, standing on the ground I matched the angles of the pillars front to back and side to side so the width and length are a result of the pig’s body geometry and not a predetermined size I had in mind. Kind of hard to tell from the top shot but I believe there are some better pictures back around page eleven.

I stopped by to drop off some parts yesterday and took a quick peek and it looks amazing.

Thanks Ron, the wood was definitely an afterthought and some of the spacing on my upright bars presented a challenge but like everything I learn the hard way and if I had to do it again I would have planned it out better.

I can't wait to see the whole wagon back together.

You and I both brother, this was supposed to be a “low-budget/ down and dirty” daily driver/ trail rig and watching you build your rig I managed to somehow turn this into a “mid- budget/ time vampire” daily driver/ trail rig with cup holders.

Napster, go back through the thread and you'll see how it is mounted. He built these custom brackets that go through the roof and attach to main inner roof structure. This is not an option for mere mortals, but Jim has major skills. I stopped by to drop off some parts yesterday and took a quick peek and it looks amazing.

I installed the bulkhead for the light bar wires and I’m installing the head liner now, I hope to have the headliner finished tonight.



I used zip tie mounts from Ruff Stuff to hold the wire to the rack.

Roof rack is bolted down for the final time, I ran out of time to Cerakote so I had it powder coated a similar color to the rest of the parts. I hope to get the headliner started tomorrow.

I really think this turned out to be my favorite of all the racks i've seen. I love the low profile and the wood look. Love how you did the lights and the way you finagled the mounting was top notch. I really wish I'd had the balls to try to replicate it, and I seriously considered it, but I was too afraid to try to dive in.

I have a knack for making the simple look more complicated than it is or as my wife likes to say “why do you have to make everything so complicated” which I think means the same thing. Anyway the rack mounts are pretty easy to make and install and I believe something like this system or the internal structure Scrapdaddy built will help with the roof flex that seems to happen to all 55’s that cracks the door openings. If you need I’ll send over my expert as soon as she’s done tuning up my steering.

Yes, hard to believe how fast they grow!

I bought the 55 a little over a year ago and for the last 9 months she and I have been working on trying to get the 4BT up and running so we can go for a drive, I’m hoping without any major hurdles we will be driving and camping this summer.

Headliner is mostly in and I’m starting to put the interior back together, lots of work and cleaning to go but I was able to sit on a seat and look through a windshield when making motor noises for the first time in months!

Well I finally decided on fenders and started moving in a forward direction, I bought the 68 that was for sale a while back for the front sheet metal and when we got a chance to take a good look at it I decided it was too nice to strip for parts, it had so little rust I could have repaired all of it in a weekend, other than the moon roof this pig was in great shape and now it’s going to a good home to get restored.



Fender partially blasted to check for bad spots and sitting in place, missing leaf springs are at the shop for round four. I’ve contacted Alcan Spring if this next set doesn’t work I’m going to cut bait and go with Alcan.
