Combination of things really, the biggest issue is I wanted to keep the pig as low as possible and stayed with SUA and that’s proving to be a challenge. The last set they built gave me the height and travel I needed but wouldn’t carry the weight, as soon as I started to bolt more parts on it became painfully obvious we missed it by a large margin. I’m trying to support the local guys but I’m losing confidence fast.

Just got done reading through the 38 pages of this build thread. Man, this is fantastic. I was proud of myself for getting my rear window working. Feeling a little inadequate now. :)
Great work, very inspiring. Cant wait to see the finished product!

Yeah, that's a big tire to fit in there. I like the look, though.

Thank you!

I get what I deserve for not following the path well-traveled and thinking I could build it my way despite all the warnings.

I’m committed now to keeping it low even if it means scraping the front housing and shocks and going to coils and links.

Well I finally decided on fenders and started moving in a forward direction, I bought the 68 that was for sale a while back for the front sheet metal and when we got a chance to take a good look at it I decided it was too nice to strip for parts, it had so little rust I could have repaired all of it in a weekend, other than the moon roof this pig was in great shape and now it’s going to a good home to get restored.

Fender partially blasted to check for bad spots and sitting in place, missing leaf springs are at the shop for round four. I’ve contacted Alcan Spring if this next set doesn’t work I’m going to cut bait and go with Alcan.

Wow, you are selling the '68? Glad it is not being stripped...

So I have a dilemma now, I had a vision of a stock appearing FJ55 and have made attempts at hiding most of the modifications or at least tried to make them look OE. Now I’m fitting the front sheet metal and had always had in the back of my mind that I should address another MUD members over heating issue he had with his 4BT in his 55 by not crowding the grill area and possibly adding some holes in the lower valance.

I popped some quick holes in a scrap valance to see if I liked the look and although I do like the look and believe they may help add some air flow they start to take away from my vision of stock appearing.Obviously I would need to do a better job laying out the pattern on my good valance but this is how it looks now.

You guys that have had or still have 4bt’s in a 55 did you have any overheating issues?

I admire your devotion to keeping it stock looking.
Those holes don't look too bad!
Especially if behind the holes is painted black, or other dark color, I bet they will look very subtle.
Will there be a winch on front? Or perhaps the license plate placement can further conceal the extra ventilation.
I think they will end up looking very Pig-like!

could you curl a bit of rubber sheet under the valance that would direct the air up in to the radiator? I don't think it looks bad but I think a rectangle cut out with a little grill might fit the boxy style of a pig. also, I assume you want it to LOOK stock, because that click clacky 4bt aint gonna sound stock.

J Mack,

I really don't think anyone will even notice the holes. Are they necessary for cooling, it couldn't hurt. As Pablo mentioned, being an expedition vehicle, better have a winch.

I thinks it looks pretty good! My parts '77 has this on the front (string is an aftermarket addition ;)) image.jpg

Ferntucky,

Didn't know you were on the cutting edge, did ya! On the string, I would go to a thin nylon rope for off road durability. :)

The holes look good and will be subtle once everything is bolted up and painted. If you did not want the holes maybe thinking of ways to direct the air you already have in more effective ways. Most modern vehicles have splash guards that also direct airflow. Also subtle lips that force air that normally goes under the vehicle up into the engine bay. May need access to a wind tunnel for testing:)

I doubt it will overheat and the only time it might is if you were stationary or crawling and there was no fan. I assume you are running an electric fan so all should be well.

JMack, I have never had overheating issues with a 4bt in an 80 or 62. That's with AC in Texas summers running 35's and aftermarket bumpers.

Thank you Dave!!!
No holes it is.
