Hand chiseled the last of the PO's crappy bedliner out. Friends don't let friends install (without any prep work) cheap bedliner!
Just put fresh paint on my all my dash knobs. Once they are all dry I will post pics on my build thread. I used Michaels paint pens and a Mr. Clean Magic eraser. The eraser takes the paint off in seconds once its dry. I never thought it would be this easy.

There had been a lot of rattling/growling coming from the gear boxes and I finally discovered that the front output shaft bearing was wobbling around inside the housing. Whew! I was semi-mentally prepped to pull it all out and rebuild them, if needed. 
I jacked up the front of the truck, then pulled the housing off and the bearing and shaft pretty much fell out. 4,000 miles ago when I inspected the tranny and transfer case before resealing them and sticking them to the back of a freshly rebuilt 2f, every thing looked pretty good. But, I missed the P.O.s screw-up. Apparently, when the T-case was serviced (probably rebuilt is my best guess since all of the gears and bearings are in tip-top condition, as far I could see) he tried to compensate for the extensive wear from a previously spun bearing by spiking the race with a punch, or maybe a chisel, that left, 20 or so, raised marks in the aluminum in an effort to create a snug fit which clearly, didn't work.
So, I emery clothed the spikes a little bit and then reset the bearing in place and chose a 0.0050 shim stock. From the shim stock I cut out 3 pieces about 1.25 inch long by about .385 and pushed them in between the bearing and race at equal spacing around the bearing.
Snug as a bug. Put it all back together with a new seal from Thompson's Industrial, just around the corner from my shop, and no more noise. Grand total, $8.10 plus a few pints of gear oil.

Just curious - when did you put a booster on the 40, or did it come with power brakes?? - I was thinking you were running an older style single style master cyl for the brakes - thought I remember you talking about that some time back. Just wondering what booster you used if you converted it??

guess we have to go back and be more precise ;p
and the reason I couldn't take the 40 is that the brake booster didn't like that all the attention on the truck recently went elsewherenot only do the trucks know when you get another one, now the parts get jealous, too

Got a fluid heat riser built/installed yesterday - seems to help so far .
I'll put a write-up in the tech section .
Had to clearance the intake a fair amount as well as dimple the header slightly , wish it didn't fit so tight but it works .

the '72 came with an OEM booster - my understanding is that the problem with converting an earlier truck is that the fin on the firewall is in the way, unless you use a spacer - but I am not an expert on this
my booster gave up, and I now have a booster/master combination from a 4 Runner - which required minor clearancing at the firewall
I think I finally found the short causing my battery to drain and my cruiser to eat alternators at the rate of one or two a year. Finally got frustrated enough to really dig in and it ended up being something simple, but dumb and hard to find. I guess I had kicked the fuse panel a few too many times, and had slightly bent the backing plate metal part just enough to touch the contacts on the back of the fuse block.
So took apart the fuse block and just finished giving a good backing soda and water bath. Cleaned up the contacts and rebent everything tight and straight again. Going to give the backing plate a nice coat of engine enamel tomorrow so hopefully if that happens again it won't ground out as easy.
Feels good to have finally found it. I've been depressed all week wishing I could find it and fix it so I could enjoy my cruiser again.
Think we're going to go up to the snow with the 40 New Years day and do some product modeling for our new company my wife and I are trying to start.
OK.. mostly I just wanted to go play in the snow.
