So what kind of oil are you guys running

I like Rotella but in the northeast i think 15w-40 is a bit heavy.
Is the Rotella 10w-30 the same quality oil?
Wondering the same thing as I just recently saw it at my local NAPA. 15w-40 gets a bit thick for mornings like today where it was 16* when I went out to start the truck. She didn't move or start yesterday and it never got above 45*.

Yeah that is what I have been running for the last 2yrs. Just thinking I need to drop to 10w-30 for the winters. I have an oil change due in the next week so thinking I may try the Rotella T 10w-30 if it is still SN rated like the 15w-40. Strangely enough I ran to the O'Reilley's that is right down from my office on my lunch break as more of an inquisitive jaunt and saw that everything that was not synthetic 15w-40 was SN rated, the one that was SM rated was the GTX Diesel which I thought was odd. All other 10w-30s I could find were $25+ a gallon where as the Rotella T 10w-30 is showing at my local NAPA for $18.79 (same price as the 15w-40).

Decided to grab the Rotella T 10w-30, first thing I get to the counter and give them the model number of the oil filter (this is at NAPA) and the guy goes back and grabs it. He then registers everything in the computer, double checks the oil and says "you know this is diesel oil right?" I say "Yup have an old Land Cruiser." Then he says, "Is it diesel?" I tell him that it is not and that I know that it is diesel oil ment for diesel engines but it is just as safe to use in a gasoline engine, he just said ok and left it at that. Very strange as I have been getting everything these since I bought the LC 2yrs ago and he has helped me multiple times.

10w-30 seems to be good, truck started up much easier this morning (had sat all day yesterday except for when I changed the oil and took the dogs to the park in the morning. Temp was all of 25* when I went out and with the 15w-40 the truck would seem very sluggish to start when that cold. This morning she seems quite peppy. We will see, I also added a bottle of Rislone 3x Engine Supplement, their ZDDP additive.

I have always used Rotella 15-40 in my 60's year round and I also use it in my Duramax diesel and my Yamaha Grizzly 660 4 wheelers. It doesn't get below freezing here very often though. Would probably use the 10-30 in winter in colder climate. It is excellent oil in my experience.

What would y'all recommend on a 10 year old 2F with about 65k on it? In central Texas. It currently leaks at the rear main seal.

Have always run mobil1 synthetic high mileage in my vehicles, but have never had engine with such low miles.

Siphon from your local Jiffy-Lube disposal.

I run Rotella dino juice in any thing with a flat tappet cam, because of the additive package it has.

Rotella 15W40 here in both of my 'Cruisers with 2F's. My 100 series gets Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30.

If the oil is ancient and in desperate need of changing, then just use a couple jugs of inexpensive Walmart 10w-30, until you run it a while and fix the leaks. Any fresh oil will help get the crud out of the engine, too. Then change it again in after you're done with valve adjustments, rear main replacements, etc.

If you are a near a CAT equipment dealer, this oil meets all needs for flat tappet engines - diesel or gas, and is quite reasonable in price.

Thanks for reminding me about this oil. I need to look into finding some.

I'd like to try that also.

My engine builder does 95% flat tappet stuff and he likes the valvoline vr1. The fact that it's "racing, not for street use" exempts it from emissions and therefore it has super high zinc content. It's also very cheap and autozone has it.

The CAT oil I posted is made for older Off Road equipment and truck engines, not their current engines. Make sure you get the correct oil, as they make a low emissions version also with much lower levels of the "Good" additives we need for flat tappet engines.
