So I watch this dude on the utoobz. He has a lot weird projects he does. He is a bit of a dweeb and can be dry, but the crap he comes up with is inspiring.



In this video he creates a paint that reduces temperature. He goes through how to make it but the results are at 45:00. Really has me thinking about applications.

Random orbital sanders like your Matco are great for smoothing with finer grits, a gear driven orbital like the one I linked is great for removing material on large flat surfaces with courser grits.
