Throw that thing in a bucket and send it to West Texas Off Road for a rebuild.

+1 on West Texas Off Road. Super quick turnaround and quality work when I sent in my mini-truck box.

So I cleaned up the box. Brand new cast iron. Epiphany moment - oil is the fountain of youth. You heard it here first. Can’t get oxidized if it’s covered in a layer of oil and grime.
For humans, lavender perhaps? Maybe some frankincense and myrrh?

You know, you could get a shorter pitman instead of moving the entire box back and redoing the intermediate shaft.

I am open to suggestions. It’s still pretty early in the process and nothing is set in stone.
But, there will need to be some box repositioning to avoid the Scout Box mounting holes/sleeves. The steering shaft coming from the column will have to be refabbed anyways since it was setup for the Scout box.
I actually hadn’t thought at all about changing pitmans, not really familiar with what interchanges with what.

Man that cleaned-up nice!

I’m all ears on the box position vs pitman arms here too

Meanwhile...
Doing some body work on the crunched drivers side back-up Light/reflector area. This was some PO damage before my time. Want to at least make my best effort at repairing it and the few other areas that need straightened out. Once I get this done, then I can cap the quarter panel.

Did quite a bit of the work using this little tool I made. Weld 1/4” bolts to the sheetmetal and then use a slide hammer to pull it out. Worked OK. Popped out a plug of metal if I got too aggressive too soon. Worked better if I welded two sides of the bolt head. Tried cutting off the heads and welding just to the shank, but had a higher frequency of pull-throughs. Got most of it out. Still a little more to do before committing the rest to bondo or solder.

Why not just keep the Scout box?

What makes a different box worth all that?

This looks like a lot of work for a steering box because it’s a Toyota thing.

The Scout box has a good reputation and I wouldn’t step over one to pick up a 60 box, with that said I wouldn’t hesitate to use a 60 box if that’s what I had.

I would buy a part from Toyota and take a picture of the red and white Toyota label on the bag next to the OE part to post in your build thread and ask the fanboys to give me a pass on the steering box.

Wow, strong argument to stay with the Scout. I do love the box - it’s always been great and one of the top mods I’ve done. Doing one or two less mods wouldn’t hurt my feelings.

I thought that I may have read that the Scout steering boxes were getting hard to get. This could be hearsay since I didn’t really do any digging to find out how true the statement was.
FJ60 boxes on the other hand seem to be fairly plentiful, maybe since they were manufactured until 1990(?), and they stopped making Scout II’s in 1979.

It is getting hard to find cores due in part to their popularity, if you have a box I would send it to a reputable re-builder. You should have it back before you need it and should last the life of the pig.
