The first official purchase of many towards this project has been made today. Probably won’t be here until next week, but is gonna be a hell of a start to the building up process.
If it looks anything like this you sir have my attention.

Some #progress today. It never fails when you get into work mode, you get the “Wanna go out to dinner?” “Wanna go to the movies?” “Wanna do this?” “So-n-so is on their way over.” “I told So-n-so we would come by to help program the VCR.”
Ugghh...
I was able to resist temptation and maintain some focus and get something accomplished. Got about 3-1/2 hrs of work in, and if this kind of progress keeps up, this tub could possibly be done in 2 - 3 months!

Anywho, scratch it off the list...

More #tubfun today with a little more #progress
Been a constant battle with porosity in the welds due to MIG welding outside in the open air, not to mention the constant wind and threat of rain. Came up with the ingenious idea of draping a tarp over myself and the area I’m welding. The welds came out great and I didn’t asphyxiate - win/win💥🎉💥

So here you can see the porosity in the metal. I ended up digging out each area with a burr bit and refilling the spot under cover out of the wind. Turned out good.

Here’s what I’m dealing with - looming storm with 10 - 15 mph wind bursts and I’m just too determined to give in.

Good thinking on the tarp. I have those problems in my shop sometimes with the wind blowing through. You could go with flux core wire and don't use gas, if it keeps being a problem.

I’ve thought about running some flux-core for thicker metal projects. This welder is supposed to be able to weld 1/4” in a single pass with flux-core, but only like 10 gauge with .030 and CO2. Not sure what the smallest readily available flux-core wire is either. I switched the wire last week from a dirty half used roll of .025 to a new roll of .023. Also (been kind of holding out on volunteering this little tidbit), last week, I found out the gas bottle on my welder was straight Argon. Don’t know how it happened. A guy I work with thinks I may have been running CO2/Argon mix (female threads on bottle - male fitting on regulator. Same as straight Argon) and when I exchanged it at some point, they gave me straight Argon, and either I didn’t notice or it didn’t register🤦‍♂️.
Anyways, I took the Argon bottle back to ACE and traded out for a CO2 bottle. When I got home I noticed the difference in regulator connection. Thought I was gonna need to get another regulator until I noticed one laying in the bottom of the welder cart. It had an adapter that hooked a regulator with a male fitting to a male threaded CO2 bottle. I’ve never used it before and have had this welder for like 12 years. Still a little bewildered about how I never caught this before and exactly at what point a CO2/Argon bottle may or may not have been traded out for straight Argon.
Weird weird weird.
But now after getting all these issues straightened out, now is probably the best this little piece of crap welder has ever run, and it’s still a piece of crap. Hopefully it will get me through at least the sheetmetal portion of this project until something better can take its place.

Have you ever used flux-core, Ron? I’m not much of a fan. Out at the Plant, there were only a handful of occasions where we couldn’t string a stick welder up to where we needed, but there was a 110 outlet where we could plug in a flux-core buzz box. Couldn’t ever really make anything to be proud about, if you know what I mean. But I guess if it’s all just gonna get ground off anyways...🤔

I use flux a lot. You are grinding them anyway.
