Had the cooling system apart again so I took the opportunity to machine a lower radiator hose coupling out of stainless.

Also went shopping and made up an extension for the radiator drain petcock.

Can make more of all of that? About to change my radiator and water pump (if I can figure out which one will work)…..but these parts looks awesome. ;-)

Not this week, but it’s the recent news to the cruiser life. Took the old bell to Moab for a a couple days of trail rides. We did Steelhender, Amasa Back, Fins and Things and Kane Creek. Loads of fun. Roached a fender. Cruiser did awesome. Hung out with a bunch guys that I’ve been doing this trip for the last 25yrs. No one has made all of them, but every year we get together in the arid west with whoever can make it. The partying may not be what it used to be, but we all have a good time.
This year I broke my collar bone a week beforehand, so no Mtbing for me. Unfortunately, one of the guys broke his down there as well.
Bummer, but the wheeling was great. View attachment 3762211View attachment 3762212View attachment 3762213
I knew that looked familiar. Did a three day mtb trip in Moab with some buddies in 2015. Rode Amassa, TWE and Mag 7. Would love to take the LV and do some easier trails (can't risk damaging the unicorn) ;)

I could but shipping from my side of the world would probably be uneconomical. Maybe someone like @Cruiser Cult could look into it if there is enough interest, I know they have a petcock for sale already although the thread is completely different to what my radiator has.

Excellent work on that union! Would be super cool to work with you on something like this and making it more available on this side of the ocean. Sending you a DM. :)

Took her this morning and had those skins replaced! Very happy with the end result.

Why would you dump a bunch of money into something that old….. oh, wait…never mind. It’s what we do.
That cracked me up, YES! I didn't realize that when I was making decisions, it was more like, this was the bike I did well on when I was racing beginners mens category back in the day, so I'm not ever getting rid of it, but I want to upgrade. Also, 29ers are too tall. Sorry everyone, but that tire is just too big, says this 5'9" dude. But rolling resistance (smack!) I'm getting back in shape and going to SMOKE some genZ 29er riders! :)

Picking my way through projects. Next up was getting the speedometer and odometer working. I assumed it was a bad cable as the PO installed it poorly and it melted against the exhaust. I installed a new cable and no love. I reached out to JVZii who's been super helpful via DM. He suggested more testing. So I pulled the cluster and rigged up a way to spin it with the drill using a section of the old cable. It spins both the speedo and odo fine. I worked my way down to the cable spun with a drill at the transfer case end. That spun the speedo. Great. I assumed maybe the cable had been too kinked behind the dash when I first installed the new one. It made a few awkward turns when I first installed it. Once hooked up though it doesn't work when driven. Next I need to see if the drive gear works by jacking up the rear and spinning the tires by hand. The info on this forum and the experts are amazing.

Most likely a bad worm gear on the rear of the transfer case…. Fairly easy fix (and while you are at it would highly recommend upgrading to the double rear output seal housing available from Georg at Valley Hybrids)

I have one I’d ordered several weeks ago…. It looks spectacular… no yet installed as I’m waiting for some other big parts and want to get it done all at the same time. Just looking at it in my hand is inspirational

Wrestled with pinion nut to fix seal leak in front differential. Made steel bar to stop flange from spinning. Needed breaker bar and pipe extension to crack loose. None of my electric or air impact torque wrenches were enough.

Discovered scored pinion flange and decided to fix with SKF Speedi Sleeve Part # SKF 99147. Powder coated flange and installed new dust shield Toyota #37341-30010.
