Tested the new tent

Interesting observation:
I drove about 20 miles of dirt forest roads to this spot. The very same spot i drove my daily, a 2019 frontier pro 4x (with upgraded bilstien suspension) to only a few days prior. The 80 actually handled the potholes and washboards much better. I could comfortably drive at 30mph in the 80 while I could barely do 20mph in the frontier.

Surprised more people don't go this route instead of buying a zillion dollar roof top tent to sleep uncomfortably without a place for a buddy heater....nice setup. 🤙🏻

Not to mention the other drawbacks that come with them, one thing you can't argue with though is the set up time.

Awning room? Looks good - how does it fare in the wind/rain?

Setup time really not that bad. A couple minutes for the Awning and about the same for the tent. It would take half as long with 2 people. Less than my tent took but obviously way more than a RTT.

There was quite a bit of wind and rain that night and the awning and tent stayed dry and stable with no drama.

Guess the most recent round of extreme temperature fluctuations here in North Texas proved to be the last straw for my hood struts. I went out the other morning to check the oil and dang near got a concussion for my trouble, but thankfully caught the hood with my hand before I had to do so with my head.

I generally prefer to use OEM parts whenever possible, but there was no way I was paying $80 to $90 each for the Toyota hood struts. That being said I also didn't want to pay for the dirt cheap ones on Amazon. I opted to snag a pair for about $50 from Cruiser Corps. They seem really solid, and included new mounting points as well. I kept the OEM mounting points just in case.

The difference is pretty extreme. Had I known what brand new hood struts felt like, I would have known a long time ago that the originals were on their way out. The hood all but flies up now and takes a good amount of force to bring it back down.

Been there, but didn't do that.
Opted to make a special tool from an old speargun pump I had as a child.
It's been working for like 6 years now, no problems.

Finally found time to get her back on the road after a year and a half of sitting. During this time I started her regularly. Had to repair a busted brake line. Did the ABS and LSPV delete to make it much simpler.

Do you know...or have you tried, to be able to stand on the rack without too much flex on those crossbars?
I have not stood on the rack yet and I am not a light small guy so I do not plan to ever put all my body weight on one bar. My understanding of the bowfin is that the rack is a system and all the load bars in place work together to distribute the weight kind of like a platform of a rooftop tent. I suppose I could check with Patrick, maybe with panels covering multiple bars you could walk on it but I don't think that's something I'd ever want to do.

I was on the fence between the @Delta VS and the bowfin. The bowfin was a surprise gift from my wife. If you've seen my rig, it's obvious I'm a huge Delta fanboy. They have a video of I believe. Dave standing with one foot on one of their crossbars on an 80.

If you're looking for that type of rigidity and strength, I would take a look at the Delta for sure.

Well, I finally did it.

I put a blower on my LC.

FWIW, I have a Prinsu (similar construction as the Bowfin using the same extruded crossbars) and I've had 5 adult men standing on my rack at the same time to watch some racing. I was the lightest weight at 180Lbs, everyone else over 200lbs and I'm sure more than one of us were standing on the crossbars. No issues.

That said, I've seen the DVS racks up close and they are incredibly strong. I'm confident that it's stronger than the Prinsu/Bowfin in terms of total load capacity.

Removed the hood insulation as it was pretty deteriorated and see that the hood braces have come loose in a few spots. What kind of epoxy should I use to secure them?

Not epoxy. The panel needs to be able to flex. you need something that has some "give".

I would suggest taking it to a local collision shop, explain the situation and have them sell you a tube of whatever they recommend.
