How many miles on your LX before the starter went out?

Snow and ice storm coming our way tonight and tomorrow morning. Stay safe.
155k. You too!

made some progress tonight with @LCMoneyPit — it’s on a trailer in my driveway at least.

Originally was going to use winch on the trailer to reverse up but we can’t find the controller so I winched on which worked great but totally flattened the battery.

I’m still on quite the slope so I need to reverse winch myself off with a snatch block so the truck is out on a charger for the night.

Trying to laugh, it could be worse 💁🏻‍♂️

It's ~20 degrees F outside and you got your LX on a trailer? More power to you!

My 2009 is at 152k and climbing fast. You got me paranoid! Would you mind sharing some of the tell tale signs of impending starter failure?

You're right in the window of likelihood for failure. Mine went at ~135k on my 2009. Seen some go as early as 100-120k.

There's cases of zero warning at all. Mine failed once, and started the second time leaving work. After getting home, it never started again after 20 or so tries.

I had a single no start a couple of weeks ago and shrugged it off to dying battery. This weekend is had another no start and she gave me one more before giving up.

Sharing all of my doom scrolling here

My 08 LX starter died recently at 97k. No warning. 🤷‍♂️

Im a paranoid “prepper”, 50% of my purchase decision going with the 200 instead of a G or RR. Going to buy a starter and keep it as spare in the truck. It can be swapped with a bottle jack and hand tools worst case.

This part is guaranteed to fail. Do we know the cause?

Is the exhaust pipe cooking them?
Should i pull my heat shielding and spray insulating high temp whatever on the back side?

Speaking for myself - I briefly considered swapping it while the truck was disabled in front of my house:

In hindsight this would have been awful given that I was on my back basically the whole time. I don’t think I could swap it in the field personally speaking.

In my case I’m 99% sure motor is fine and I could hear clicking but not engaging. So my theory is that the plunger wears out and just stops grabbing the engagement fork.

Dont even remind me of the week i spent on the floor recently lol.

Still haven’t refitted liners or lifted more, looking for best sensor link solution.
But i feel you, i had an undriveable truck right at the freeze during Christmas and the timing was horrible. Family in town, across town, every shop booked up for weeks. I begged the shop down the street to align the rig just to be mobile in case shtf.

Hate having a down apocalypse truck during these now common events. Lucky this time had power and water at home.

Mine pooped the bed without warning when I went to get a haircut locally. AAA brought it back to the house and I had it swapped in about 4ish hours thanks to a very helpful video of someone doing it on a Sequoia - I HAD to get it done that day as I was leaving town the following morning. 148k on the clock. I would have dreaded doing it in the snow, fortunately, it was August and nice weather. And it was an Arizona truck so the manifold studs were clean and it came off easy.

I'm sure you are glad it's behind you and that it wasn't worse.

Can you link that video into the starter replacement thread?

I had the truck backed in the garage to finish up swapping out the rear differential fluid. When I finished I pressed the start button and nothing.

After what was possibly a panic attack I popped the hood and checked the battery - 12.2v. I put the NOCO on it and after a very long crank it started.

I got the truck situated in the garage just in case and swapped in my old X2 power back in. Thankfully the truck started again.

Dudes omg 🫠🫠🫠

I’m going to be careful next couple of days just in case but hope it’s the end of the drama. I’m going to warranty out this new interstate battery next week. My theory is that maybe I killed a cell winching it in the trailer.

Whew!

Yes, this theory is likely. I've now very cautious when using electric motor draws with batteries in low states of charge. Things like starters, compressors, and definitely a winch. These inductive loads will find power however they can get it. Power is volts x amps. With a battery in a weak or low state of charge, will pull serious amps to replace volts. It's the amps that will kill electric circuits and contacts - and possibly battery cells in your case.

I know it wasn't possibly in your case, but I only run heavy draw devices like compressors, with the engine on.

Same here, everything but my winch is on switched power for that reason.
