I suggest not disassembling the choke plate and throttle plates … my weber has over 200k on it and only had to do it once and that was just recently

Don’t think you have that many miles to warrant that

The screws for them are pesky and often strip and if you can do everything else … it is easy …. EASY

If @RevISK is being generous to offer face time I would go that route… there are most likely many videos that go step by step what to do

Regarding the valve adjustment, it’s one of the things that seem like crazy voodoo until you do it. Afterwards you’re amazed it was that simple and empowered that you have that much more say over your vehicles health.

I’m happy to “you’re doing it wrong” from a far. People are helping me big time so anything I can do to give back.

Better to hear them than to burn them. I set my valves on the loose end of the specs. My dad usually would set things it running, me not so much - engine doesn't cool off enough in the 15 minutes to check/adjust the lash.

I get it, I was just too lazy to bump it around in 4th or turn the flywheel figuring out TDC and 180 and 360 BDC and who's on first, LOL. What I CAN do is splash around a bunch of oil, chase slippery 17mms around, and have fun inventing cuss words.

Got mine in the back yard too. Going to finish a bunch of little projects in these cold months while I am doing the head too. a few body panels, soft break lines because I have them, birfs, windsheild gasket (if its warm enough). got all kinds of fun stuff to keep me busy!

His method is correct. I've seen all kinds of references to adjusting valves while the engine is running. Do NOT do this. These are solid lifters, not hydraulic. They should be set with the engine warm, but NOT running.

Work Smerk, left that gig at 11 am and came home to finish up my head gasket install. Every one was goofing off with a Christmas party, and I wasn't hungry, so I just left. But I got everything buttoned up! I finished the actual head gasket install about a week ago, then got the manifolds reinstalled Sunday. Today I just had to re-torque everything after a few heat cycles and get the air out of the coolant system... The head bolts were still spot on, but the manifolds all turned another quarter inch. While I was in there I installed some plastic and rubber for the accelerator linkage, Rubber Grommet 90480-15227 and Plastic Bushing 90386-08077... Wow that made a difference in throttle-feel! I hope it is going to help my secondary open... for the first time (facepalm). No pictures of this stuff, sorry. I'll be driving my 40 to work tomorrow, so mission accomplished! If the (now Toyota) head gasket blows again in the next 3 years then I will get the head and block surfaced, but at the moment, I am calling this a win. Ya'll have a great rest of the week, and Merry Black Friday!

Best practice to replace the valve cover gasket when doing the valves and also the grommets??

Finished up the driver seat… passenger still to go.

Went with the Spector. Very pricey, but the quality of construction is top-notch (even with my amateur upholstery skills). Bought the replacement headrest covers, but haven’t decided if I will use them as my current headrests are in fairly decent condition and match the new seats better than I expected

Just using this picture as an example but I’m in the process of redoing my cooling system on my 3/1977 40 and want to paint the splash shield while I’m in there. In order to remove the lower splash shield that I have circled in the picture do I need to remove the radiator support bracket and then are there just a few bolts holding it to the frame rail?
Edit: I already have the radiator, shroud and fan removed. Just have the radiator support bracket installed still.

Took it for a drive to get a haircut. While in the barber shop a guy stopped to take some pics. My daughter got his number and he sent these to me. Getting close to last days of the season for taking her out- almost into salt season...

day dreaming of driving mine again soon. Looking through photos i took all summer has me fired up to get wrenching again to keep this 40 progressing. I am also thinking about putting a warn 8274 on the front of this bad boy. a big winter project for me is rebuilding this 4speed I have. I would love to get it installed. I love the three speed but it would be nice to have a synchronized 1st and R.

Found this photo below from summer and it made me think that a OBX beach meet up needs to happen. This guy drove his fj43 from the middle of the state to here on Ocracoke.

The kendas have been great, really have not worn much. I Strongly recommend! They came with the 40 though and given the choice Personally I love the look of the 750 r16 tires on the old earlier fj40s some super traxions or something along those lines. I gotta buy some 16inch oem style rims first though. Not the tire for lots of hwy driving but for around where I am would be good.

I feel the 750 r16 size gives the 40 an old school beefed up willys look that I love!
