Been practicing with the Mig after finally getting it set up…….. thinking I’m all ready for some ‘minor’ body repair to fill in some small rust holes

Then this…….

Lot of burn through so far…… going to switch to .023 wire! Knew there was a reason I’ve been procrastinating about body work……

Meh - Suppose it’s better than the bondo & wire mesh that was in it before………. Tip my hat to those of you that are good at this! 🤣

Once you’re “done”, take it in a dark room and shine a flashlight from the back and see all the pinholes. That’s always a fun and discouraging experiment.

Looking good! .023 wire will definitely help and cut out pas any rust or you’ll just chase holes.

That ‘flashlight’ idea? “Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then!” 🤣 Bob Seger

Finally figured out where the clutch and brake pedal return springs mounted on my 1976 South American 40. Since my pedal bucket is the early type, the springs mount to a bracket that was never installed.

Thanks to @kevos37, I powder coated the bracket and install it. While at it, I replaced the pedal bushings 90386-13007 and springs 90506-12450 as well as the collar and shaft. The project was one of those time consuming annoying projects that involved removing parking brake mounting bracket. It’s no wonder the PO never installed the proper bracket.

The payoff is a smoother pedal as the springs were previously mounted to a hole under the dash requiring too much spring tension to span the distance. Also, the bushings removed the pedal squeak.

Replaced the original weatherstripping on the front doors and kick vents with new OEM weatherstripping. Also found this cool service sticker from the original dealer on the driver door. Have to clean up some excess adhesive and the doors are ready to go back on. Kick vents are in already…hopefully this helps with some of the rattles going down the road. 😂

Passenger Door Part#:67861-90300
Kick Vents Part#: 55786-90301

Install the doors that I just repaired in the previous posts and then I used an iron remover for the paint and my whole truck turned purple. I had to do it four times to get all of the crap out of the paint. Hopefully if it doesn’t rain tomorrow she goes off for the exhaust.

Continued futzing with rebuilding the front heater box.
I've started reassembly. The foam kit from Partspuzzle in the Netherlands is excellent. (Link to that kit: complete gasket set heater blower, air duct and heater Toyota landcruiser FJ40 | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/285067698402)

As I test fit everything, I realized that the bottom flap for the defrost routing is the only moving part that doesn't have some sort of plastic bushing. It's not going to see a lot of use, but I'm wondering if and what lubricant I should use to make up for the lack of a bushing.

The two points that will see the movement. And yes I probably am over thinking this.

My 11 year old wanted to show his buddies that he knew how to work the 40. He knew to check that it was in neutral first. But unbeknownst to him, Jake in the passenger seat shifted it into 1st when he wasn’t looking (nor me). When it started to move forward, he freaked and took foot off the clutch.

I now need to rebuild a chimney and try to salvage the woodstove. 😓

A learning experience that he’ll never forget. It happens to the best of us…..

My boy started my cruiser in reverse and nearly ran over me when he was 5. If my buddy hadn't yelled I would have been crushed. Luckily I just had to replace the bumper on some old man's truck, but boy was he pissed!

Fortunately the 40 only ended up with a scratch. That 4Plus bumper is no joke!

I used it to realign the chimney and pull the sill back 5 1/2 inches. Worked rather well. Was gonna use the 8274 but was worried it is too fast!

Now just have to decide if I repair the chimney or take it down and go with pipe.
