I've now spend about 3+ hours looking for swap info on using a 2uzfe in my 96 FZJ and all i can find is general references to the Slee swap and a bunch of swaps into FJ80's. No good info into the later FZJ80's. I'm really wanting research this for a down the road swap and maybe slowly start collecting parts. One thing i do know is the transmissions are basically the same so how hard can it be? If i end up doing a swap i want to keep it all Toyota.

Call slee. Nobody has a documented build thread for this.

That 4.7 is a great engine. We have one in a GX.

Here’s my list of notes and questions I have put together. Most of this is just general info but things like radiator and hoses might be only 3FE specific. Quoted things are from the fj80 swap thread here:

2UZFE swap into FJ80 - building - in progress

2uz swap notes

A750f 5 speed auto 03+
(Column mounted shifter vs trans tunnel mounted shifter...ie. tundra vs LC)

No idea how Sequoia/4Runner/GX shifter set up is

VVTI 2005/2006

Drive by wire (DBW) with VVTI

Tundras have centered transmission outputs. Need passenger side from a land cruiser

Immobilizer (special key) not present in 2005 tundra ECU but supposedly is in 2006 tundra. My friend’s 2006 SR5 Tundra doesn’t have a special key. No idea on Sequoia/4Runner/GX/LX, but highly likely Lexus has immobilizer

Need pedal assembly as well for DBW

Nice to have gauge cluster

Possibly modified SC400 oil pan to clear diff/panhard Mount

“2wd ecu might be easier option”

“The t-case is controlled by a separate ecu in the 2005 vehicle and other than maybe the diff-lock and low range signals to the engine ECU, they share nothing.”

stock t-case will work

“Motor will always need to be moved forward. The engine bay was set up for an I6 so the tunnel concaves back in the middle. The V8 can't sit back that far so it has to come forward 4" or so.”

Stock radiator will work, and misc hoses for radiator and heater.

Custom engine mounts
custom crossmember
custom exhaust
custom a/c lines
custom power steering lines
Custom wiring to adapt one harness to the other.

Otherwise I don’t have much to add. Locally there was a 2006 tundra 2uz with A750F with 140k on it for sale for $900 that I highly considered but he didn’t have anything else. I just know I don’t have the time and won’t have the time for the foreseeable future. And there is the question of shifters. I would assume it’s all electronic anyway so the column shifter could be unplugged and a trans tunnel shifter could be plugged in, but I have no idea. If and when I go down this road for my ‘92, I am going to try and find a half cut.

You might wanna go poke around on the 40’s forum; there is a very well documented swap of a 4.7 into a 40 by a guy who I believe now lives in AZ. Swap is ridiculously clean and well executed !

Get the EWD for your 80 and whatever donor you get the motor from and get to studying and dive in. If you’ve done that much research you should have read there is a preferred trans and t-case combo. I don’t recall the specifics, but pretty sure early 100 series is necessary. Tundra, 4Runner, GX no bueno for swapping into 80series.

Sounds crazy. Was thinking about swapping my 2UZ for a 2011-2014 Tundra/sequoia 5.7L. Lucky enough to find an SC for that motor. Anyone know if anyone has done such a swap. I’m trolling mud but I’m appealing g to see if anyone has a shortcut?
Thanks

You currently have an 80 series with a 2UZ and are thinking of swapping it for a 3UR 5.7L? Or I think you might have your nomenclature confused and you have a 1FZ? Either way swapping from a 1FZ or a 2UZ to a 3UR is going to be an expensive proposition. If you’re having a shop do it, figure $20-25k minimum.

Thanks for the response. It was a typo. I was thinking about a 100 series motor 4.7 into an 80. My motor is the 4.0L in the 80.
I also own a 100 series (trying to either sell the 80 or swap the motor out and sell the 100.) 🤔🤔

I understand the love for the 2UZ, but for the effort required to do the swap, I would just go with a 4bt cummins....or, more idealy, a 6bt :) I believe wits end is working on an adapter for the 80 tcase to the NV4500 manual trans that would mate up with the 6bt :)

have you driven a 6BT and a 2UZ in an 80 series. Did you wear earplugs or just have a really loud radio?

I am a noob, but I have researched swaps a lot (for putting a VW TDi into my Toyota mini truck). For all the effort and money, why not go solid axle on the 100-series and supercharge that 2uz?

100 series SAS is not common but has been done:

I’ve researched the SAS and there seems to be a lot more modifications and fabrication that happens. I am limited to what I can do because I live in California and wits end has only made a turbo kit for the 4.5L and mine is the old 4.0.
I’ve seen the turbo and SC kits out there but wits end only makes a CARB kit for the 4.5 and the SC kits are not CARB approved (from AUS).

I’ve been trolling the motor swap threads to see if someone actually listed their parts and mods in a simple form. The one from Virginia (Lou) was thorough but the thread seems to be dead.
Not sure why but I am leaning to keep it in the Toyota brand.
So far I have:
Custom motor mounts
Wiring/harnesses
Computer units (forgive my lack of terminology)
Headers and custom exhaust
Custom fan shroud
Transmission and custom connection to the axle (again forgive my lack of terms)
If anyone out there has specifics of a list and step by step I’d be eternally grateful. 😁😁
I would like to put in the work myself and document it in completion. It would help out heaps to have somewhat of a map and a head start.
Cheers to all.

If your going to go V8 just do a LS and be done with it. While keeping it Toyota is great and all you’ll get more hp per $ with the LS.

If cost is a non issue then I applaud the effort.

The only reason the thread seems dead is I ran out of mods.... it's pretty much done. I can't remember why but there's a reason why Slee is not swapping the VVTi in the 80.. and after reading the thread that's linked you need to have made skills and a firm understanding of electronics and wiring. It's very obvious this swap was a total PITA. If i had to spend this much money for an engine swap again I'd go for a big domestic crate motor. I don't think you'll find a step by step but I know Slee spent 2 years figuring it all out and to my knowledge does not swap in the VVTi

Lou,
You are a gentleman and a scholar. It was your thread that had me contact Slee the other day and yes they do not perform such swaps anymore.
For some reason I’ve got to believe there’s a shop out there that is doing these and has gotten the process down pat. I’m an optimist but also an open to hard facts.
The search continues. Anyone in Southern California on here done a swap lately?

I will now troll the threads for the LS swap info.
Will you finish posting photos and info of the project? Everyone, including myself are 🤤 over it!
