Sounds like you turned your 4bt into a 2 stroke diesel. Hope you can get it back on the road for the party.

New 4 bt crate motor

Crate motor in Spokane. Says $400 but i would think they mean 4k.

Just tried to contact the seller but the contact number is disconnected, something tells me I don't want to get involved with a wire him cash and he'll ship the crate sight unseen deal.
Thanks I appreciate the heads up.

Man, of all the luck. I know that exact Napa/Hardware/Grocery store you spent time at in Wells... they have come up with some pretty amazing solutions over the years. Fingers crossed your motor pulls through.

WOW! that engine has given you troubles from the get go. Wasn't it "rebuilt" and you had to put a head on it right away? I'll ask Larry if he has any 4BT leads. He usually knows of something.

Yea I haven't had the best 4BT luck but I'm having too much fun to care..

Every part was replaced with genuine Cummins parts whether they needed it or not before I put the 4BT in the pig so yes that was a Cummins water pump that failed with 13000 miles on it.

I think the problem is you didn't rebuild it. Had you rebuilt it I imagine it would have been right. There are failures on even brand new cars. They are machines. Things can break.

I've been keeping track of this build for quite a while. I cooked the journal bearing on the first turbo on the 4runner coming through Reno on my way back to Boise about 8 years ago. I so happened to hit Reno at 5:15 on a Thursday and found some decent traffic. This guy in a convertible Camaro got stuck behind me for a while and i'm pretty sure I helped rust proof the front of his car (along with the back of mine) by the way he looked at me when he finally could pass me.

Glad you made it home in one piece - it seems any trip I take has some story involved with it that makes a normal "boring" road trip more exciting.

Wow I forgot exactly how many bolts and screws hold the front sheet metal on a pig, two days later I can start unbolting the engine…

Replacing or rebuilding Jim?

The plan as of now is to get it out and see if the block is still standard bore then get it to the machine shop so they can start the required machine work. If this block is at or near max over bore then I need to hunt down another.

Either way I think I’ve settled on building a complete short block with new OEM Cummins parts and not taking any more chances on low mile engines for sale on the interwebs..

Yea and the pity party I’m throwing myself isn’t helping but the thought of getting it back on the road and joining in on some of the events like cruise Moab or the pig party is motivating me to put my big boy pants back on and get to work..

Engine is out and damage assessment has started, looks like valves have made contact with the pistons on every cylinder so assuming new valves will be part of the rebuild.

Engine is going to the machine shop Monday to see exactly what the final damage report and $$$$.$$ is but pistons are standard bore so fingers crossed I can reuse the block..

I'm not familiar with the Cummins, but what do you think caused the valves to hit the pistons, wrong cam?

Big cam + 4000 RPM + heavy right foot = $hitshow.

They make pistons with valve reliefs cut in them and I'm guessing I'll know more about them Monday..

That was going to be my question, do you have the 60# valve springs?

I had 60# springs and a Colt stage 2 cam, according to Colt that should have worked fine with stock pistons but as you can see from the pictures they were wrong. New pistons are getting fly cut .120” to avoid contact with the new valves. Unfortunately two of the pistons had stuck rings the wore into the cylinders .007” on one side and they are not sure it will clean with the .020” over so I’m stuck with going to the .040” pistons but it looks like they can save the block.

Still making the list of parts I need to order but so far it looks like I could buy two used low mile engines for what it’s going to cost to rebuild one correctly with all new parts :(
