That angle it looks like an early Belleview winch … but mounted flat instead of upright

Is that (early Belleview) good or bad? As soon as it gets here I will take several more pics, and try to find a name / data plate on it. Scheduled to arrive tomorrow... FINALLY.

I would suggest taking a straight edge across the back of the hand brake on the transfer case to the OD. I install an H42 into my 68 FJ40 which shares the basic same tub and frame concerning adding a four speed. I would not be able to add a Fairey OD without moving the torque tube behind the transfer case. I used a transmission tunnel from a 74-78 model which helped with the taller transmission. The hand brake just clears the torque tube. I would spend the time test fitting the running gear before having frame/tub cleaned up and coated only to fit you need to modify something.

As others have said @cruisermatt is close to you. He is awesome and really helpful. He has gotten me a few parts with my fj40 including a bell housing and drive shafts for my early fj40. Seriously if you have questions he is a good guy to ask.

I just went back to a 3 on the tree. In todays world I think its somthing you should keep. even though its not as desirable as the 4speed its rare now that people my age have any experince with a three on the tree. there are a few adapters floating around to make the 4speed a column shift too.
Thank you.

I'm a PTO winch guy but isn't the motor on the opposite side when mounted correctly. If it is a Belleview winch would be a good period correct winch.

I installed the H42 in my 68 years ago. Depending on the year month of you transmission and transfer the flywheel and could be early or late styles. I did my in 1994. I kept the original F engine along with the early style flywheel/clutch. I had the flywheel and pressure redone and new clutch disc. After I got everything installed the clutch shuddered when engaging. Early style clutch has three adjustable arms. The shop didn't have them adjusted properly. While the shop would have adjusted them for free I would have to pulled the drivetrain to get the pressure to the shop. Managed to adjust in place. That is not the correct way to adjust them.

I would be 100% sure everything correct ahead of time instead of doing it twice. Up to 9/72 the FJ40 tub and frame were not made to use a four speed. I did not modify my frame or tub to install a four speed but wasn't simple job. My 68 is rust free and didn't want to modify frame or tub. If you willing to modify would do it ahead of time. I would use the torque I posted a picture of in one of your other threads. Besides a different torque also further back. The back of the transmission tunnel outline on the tub is smaller in the back than the 9/72 tub. I had to make some adjustments there so the transfer case clears the tub.

A lot of early winches had controls in the cabin and were IN only. No power out. I'm not a fan of pto winches. Get an 8274 and be done with it.

It looks to be a Bellville mounted flat and backwards.

Tomorrow will be Christmas, and I will be able to take pics and tell more. Happy day in my house, as the FJ40 and the drivetrain both shipped. See attached:

Dang transport drivers tried to talk the seller into selling it to them instead, but he explained I had already paid and I already had the title. Then they asked him how much, and they told him he sold it way too cheap and they would have paid way more. Grrrr...... 🤬

I would call their company and complain, but my wife wisely said "Get it delivered first."

Some people just like to talk big, he probably pulls that routine with every classic he delivers. If someone says OK lets have the money that would start a whole new song and dance about how he would if his money wasn't tied up in mutual funds at the moment.

LOL, you are probably right.

When our son moved cross the country, he arranged for a transport company to move his 1972 VW bus. He then left to start his new job, leaving me to meet the transport driver. When the driver finally showed up, he said he didn’t know how to drive a stick. So I had to drive the anemic bus up the ramps. I remember there was some classic car in front of where he wanted me to put the bus on the upper rack. To say it was dicey is a huge understatement. 😝

Yeah, I was VERY glad I wasn't there. I would have been very nervous. I do wish the seller had gotten some pics of the underside of it, but I'll take some when it arrives before they off load it.

Sounds like VERY good words of wisdom! Thank you so much. I agree with you. I just want to get it running again (too bad someone took the engine completely apart and then stopped, and it's sitting in the back, see attached pic). I learned to drive on a stick shift, but haven't driven one in ages. This, however, is a column shift, and I haven't driven one of those in 40 years! LOL! I'm wondering, for my boys, if I should teach them how to drive a 3 on the tree, or a 4 on the floor. I always loved driving a stick, but had both hips reconstructed 39 years ago at the ripe old age of 16, so especially for driving in traffic I started driving automatics. But I think it would be great for the boys. Load them and our fishing gear up and go wet a hook, or even take it to some trails or the beach.

And I REALLY like what you said about listening, and hearing the story it is trying to tell. You should be a writer! So my 1st / Primary goal is to get it going again, and get the things on it that it should have had originally (hub caps, ash tray even though I don't smoke, original front bumper instead of this big cattle guard, roll bar) and see if I can clean and buff out the paint. Growing up back home in Texas, I used to know a retired missionary that had an FJ40 in his barn. I'm sure it is gone by now, but I'm trying to get in touch with him to find out. I'd ultimately like to teach my 2 sons how to work on & restore these, and then give them each one as a wedding gift someday.

As you start buying parts, use the forum and really look around. Bumpers and hubcaps can still be had brand new from the dealership for much cheaper than you’ll see them listed locally or eBay. Ash trays seem to be one of the pieces that go missing and can cost a couple hundred for a good one. May be able to get someone to 3D print an insert if it doesn’t ever need to open. Good luck and keep posting pics.

Sad when a transport driver who transports classic vehicles doesn't know how to drive a stick shift transmission.

Thanks. I even thought about trying to put a radio where the ashtray goes.
