if you have riveted wheels do not waste any more of your time with them, scrap them and get a set of new welded wheels. You'll spend more restoring them and they won't work with front disc brakes if you ever do that

Doody, I already dropped them off and they already started. I looked at getting a new set and saw that City Racer has the 16" set of 5 for $1,400 but if I did that right now and spent the money to convert the front to disc brakes, my wife might have a stroke! I may have to run these for a while and get by with the drum brakes for a year or two and then do those upgrades. Let her recover from the FJ expenses a bit.

If my 15" wheels were welded, would they work with disc brakes? If so, maybe I'll look for some used 15" welded wheels in the classifieds or something.

Don, dude, I literelly sell a set of brand OEM new welded wheels an hour up the road from you for like $130ish a wheel.

SOLD! I'll call the other place and stop them. The wheel that was on the spare is welded, so that one should be fine, correct? Keep it and scrap the other four? At first I just thought about buying two new ones for the front but I want to be able to rotate the tire so that didn't make much sense.

If all 4 date codes match on the rivetted ones, you'll likely get a buyer in the classifieds. Your new ones will have the boxes to ship your old ones to a buyer but depends on how much hassle you want to deal with.

That's a good idea. What do you think would be a fair price for the riveted ones? And, I wonder if I should go ahead and have them cleaned up, or sell them as is? It's only $30 per wheel and they will be 100% clean & profiled and ready for primer & paint or powder coating.

Thoughts?

Id sell the old ones as is. Your market maybe limited. I think the new ones come in black.

Its a limited market left to purists. $20 or $30 each? IDK. You can post them on craigslist or market place. 6 lug is 6 lug, someone might need them for their trailer. There might be value in the hub cap clips if you wanted to remove them.

Wheels & Front Disc Brake Conversions
So the riveted wheels will not work if I decide to do the front disc brake conversion, which I absolutely plan on doing maybe in a year after my wife has forgotten how much money I have spent on the FJ. "IF" I were to remove the rivets and weld them, would they work? Or, is there something about the shape of the back of the wheel that won't clear the disc brake setup? Just wondering if it is the rivets themselves hitting and not clearing, or the shape of the wheel itself?

I think the rivet heads will hit the caliper. I guess you could weld them but they could be out of balance when you're done. I think if you remove rivets their will be holes. The rivets hold the center section to the rim.

I think it would take a far better welder than me to do it, without warping the metal, AND have it be in balance. I'm going to buy a set from cruisermatt. Plus I can drive over and pick them up.

I saw a video of 2 young men working together to take the top off an FJ40 to go for a ride. They struggled with it and looked like a 3rd person would have been very helpful.

I would like to rig something up in my garage to be able to easily take the top off by myself when I want to go topless. Some pulleys or chain hoist and stuff.

If any of you have rigged up something to do this in your garage, please tell me about it and post some photos.

Thank you.
Back in the day when I had an ‘87 4Runner I used a simple hand crank boat winch

I wouldn't weld them.

Yep, definitely will be a purist interested in these which is why I mentioned that "if" the date codes matched they may be a bit more valuable to someone who is looking for period date correct but doesn't want to chase them down one at a time.

@FloridaLife is for sure not going to get rich from this, that's for sure. 😅
