Rented a wet vacuum and finally got around the cleaning the seats and taking all the old oil/grease and Manitoba dust out of them. Let me tell you, what a freaking difference. Feels like a new truck now.

Diesellibrarian-thanks-it was 22mm which I found at AutoZone of all places. CityRacer has an OEM part with the crush washers so it’s on its way. AutoZone did show an aftermarket part which was the same price as CityRacer.

I have a 1973 FJ40 with the hard to find reverse light! Lens are non existent! I found out many old car enthusiasts have the same problem and make their own! So why no me! I tested the theory and made a mold from a clearance light!
I found out...
This truck is beating me up over the wiper fuse.
I had a slow motor on the wiper before, it would run a few times and then stop. The motor connector was slightly melted. I sourced a used wiper motor; bench tested it and just installed it after...
AC is charged. Wipers now work again and I can throw the linkage back in tomorrow.
We’re almost ready to put carpet back into it and daily it.
40* vent temps in 70* weather tonight. We had to charge it again with r134. I was ready to put r12...
It's a pain, but you can replace the fuel pulsation damper without removing any intake stuff. I used a crow's foot socket that I ground down a bit to make it fit. I wanna say it was 22 or 23mm.
I don't know if they're available OEM. I got mine...
Finally added 3-4 layers of bed liner to the wheel wells to cover the weld job finally.
Once that was drying with a heater on it, I tackled getting the interior finally back together for the first time since November???
Feels great.

Protectionist import tariffs?
EDIT: I called the dealer, and they are $130 CDN each, which is about $95 USD. So still a little cheaper but not crazy cheap.
You can get brand new OEM 40 wheels from a dealer, and they’re MUCH cheaper in Canada than they are in the states. Last time I checked it was about $70/wheel in CA and $130/wheel in the US. No idea why there’s a price differential.
Hmmm. I wonder what it would cost to ship them to Sweetgrass, MT? I'm only about 50 miles from the border, so it would be easy to pop down there to pick them up.
I will send you a DM about this.
Thanks for the detailed explanation! I've been basically doing what you describe. Etching primer on bare metal, followed by a 2k high-build primer, followed by top coat. The rusty spots that I didn't cut out have been hit with a rust converter...
Ding ding! Self etching is for bare surfaces - metal, fiberglass, some plastics. It's there to provide a hold for the next layer of primer to adhere to rather than the bare material. You really don't want to apply your paint directly to the...
I'm not an expert, but this is what I've been given to understand: self-etch is designed to create a strong chemical when applied to clean bare metal, making for solid adhesion for subsequent layers. I think red oxide is often applied over metal...
Still plugging away at things on this old beast. Over the weekend I did a bunch of seam-sealing and some sanding and paint stuff on the body. I put self-etching primer over any bare metal, and then some red oxide primer over top of that. My goal...
yup, draggin' this out of the morass. floor patching turned out to be more than what i first thought. drivers side needed base of A pillar rebuilt before floor could be patched. passenger side had a void i totally missed when doing the rocker...
I also did oem belts. My last set was from 2018 and I had out 50,000 miles on them. I had a random intermittent chirp from a belt delaminating.
It’s dead quiet now.
I have had parts shipped to At The Border Storage in Sweetgrass, MT. Haven't used them in a while, but it looks like they're still operating: Border Storage - http://www.attheborderstorage.com/
Also makes for a great chance to grab a 40 of Jim...
Wow, long time no post - almost two years. So much has happened and I should revive this thread. Still daily driving Matilda and she's still taking me everywhere I need to go. I'll post a list of stuff below with more detailed posts coming soon...
It doesn't hurt to smear some automotive seam sealer over the weld joints after priming. That will seal up any pinholes and extend the life of the repair.
