So I’ve had this FJ40 for a month today. I’ve been slowly working through issues found since I purchased it non-running. As of yesterday I finally have all the lighting issues solved with the exception of the backup light. My investigation seems to reveal that this was originally a column shift. I had some wires in the engine compartment dangling and have identified one set as the windshield washer (it doesn’t have one), and one set that is the backup switch. (A 3rd pair that are both blue with white tracer I haven’t been able to identify), but that’s beside the point. Anyway, I had been underneath and took out what I thought was the reverse switch from the front of the place the floor shifter goes into the transmission…it was just a plug. So my question is whether there is a known switch that I can buy to go there? I’ve searched, but because I now am not sure of the age transmission I should be looking for, I’m lost. It is a 3 speed, but that’s all I know. I read one thread where someone used a heavy duty push button starter switch (they used it on column shift) and it almost looks like it could work on the transmission mount-if the threads were right.

If anyone knows of how to identify the trans let me know. Here is a pic I took to see what was under there. I didn’t want to have to remove seats to get tunnel out. I’ve sort of had tunnel vision focusing on finding wires and the switch and basically just came to the conclusion it’s been changed as I was finishing up for the day. Thanks.

On my 72 with the OEM 3 on the floor, I put a separate back up light and manual switch. The oem light was like 1.5x3' and not very bright due to oxidized plastic. I use to have an old cheap crappy yellow glass fog light for the back up light that used a incandescent bulb - it sorta rusted away. The other day I wired in a white 12 V spot/work 18 W LED from Amoron $8. Very bright and handy for backing into my place about 250 yards in the dark. 2 day later I find the LED I was looking for - they switch from solid amber or white to flashing like in morse code in amber or white. I really like the amber mode as it doesn't toy with my night vision.

Yes there is a reverse switch on the floor 3 speed tranny
I think the wire is light purple/red from haynes manual
