The top came off the 4Runners in '87? That's cool. I miss my '99 4Runner that I sold last year.
Yes sir all the first gens did. That was one that "got away"

Yep, definitely will be a purist interested in these which is why I mentioned that "if" the date codes matched they may be a bit more valuable to someone who is looking for period date correct but doesn't want to chase them down one at a time.

@FloridaLife is for sure not going to get rich from this, that's for sure. 😅

No doubt! I was just curious if I'd be better off scrapping them or selling them. But last time I tried to sell parts, most of it went to the scrap yard.

Plasma & FJ40
Looking back at my receipts and spreadsheet of expenses on this project and that it is bleeding me dry, I have had an epiphany. I (and perhaps many of not all other FJ40 owners) need to find a place to sell my plasma! I heard about this a decade ago but forgot about it, and I already donate blood every 56 days (every 30 days if I sneak over to a different place, since they only allow every 56 days), and all I get is a $20 restaurant gift card and a t-shirt, and they keep bugging me wanting my platelets because I have the blood type that can donate those. I remember hearing back then that you could earn $500 - $1,000 a month donating plasma, but I forgot about it. So maybe my plasma could fund my FJ40! :D A quick Google search and the first one I clicked on for my area said "Your time can help safe lives, donate your plasma and earn up to $750". And another Google search of "How often can I donate plasma?" got the results of twice a week with 1 full day in between. 🤯 FJ40 bleeding me dry... problem solved! Sign me up! I'm calling them!

I am a BIG fan of City Racer.

I have found the parts to be excellent quality, the prices very reasonable, and the customer service to be exceptional.

My opinion only, but City Racer is my go-to source for FJ40 parts.

BTW, I love the Freeborn Red. Your rig will look awesome when finished!

I have DEFINITELY paid at least a couple of mortgages for City Racer. Probably car payments too. LOL! I'm probably putting these FJ40 vendors kids through college.

Rear Crossmember
On my '71 FJ40 (build date 12/1970) I am going to replace my rear crossmember, mine is in bad shape. I'm talking about the piece that the bumperettes bolt onto. On the back side of the bumperettes are the mounts for the rear leaf springs. From the factory, were those rear leaf spring mounts bolted, riveted, or welded to the crossmember? I ask because mine are welded, so we (and by we, I actually mean the paint & body guys) are going to have to cut them off of the original crossmember and weld them to the new one, or bolt them if there are bolt holes on the new one. I was just curious if everyone's rear leaf spring mounts are welded to the rear crossmember, or if this is yet another thing I can thank previous owners for?

In the past I welded on the sides of mine because the rivets were getting a little loose.

Everyone i have seen has been riveted to the frame rails and welded just to the rear crossmember.

Having paint and body guys do cutting and welding on frame and suspension parts doesn't sound like something I would be interested in.

Indeed. "Paint and Body Guys" was a poor way of conveying the situation. My bad. 1 of them is a professional welder, all day every day on his 9 to 5 job. He will be doing that part.

Thank You!!!
@charliemeyer007 and @cruisermatt

Just a quick shout out and THANK YOU to both @cruisermatt and @charliemeyer007. I can't say enough how much I appreciate @cruisermatt for letting me know that among the large variety of FJ parts he carries, he also carries the OEM wheels, which I ended up needing this week if I (or my son's or a future owner) ever want to do a front disc brakes conversion (which I want to do in a year or 2 when my wife has forgotten a little about how much I've spent on the project). I'll be picking them up tomorrow!

And a hats off and thank you to @charliemeyer007 for educating me about a tire that I had never heard of that will save me almost the exact same amount of money as what I am going to spend on new wheels at @cruisermatt's tomorrow!

Woohoo!!! Thank you to both you guys! I REALLY appreciate you both!!!

Drove over and picked up the new OEM wheels from @cruisermatt today. They look great, and will allow me to run disk brakes in the future! 😃

Rad you can drive to Matt.
Well, I could too, but it would take longer by a day or so.

When does rubber meet the metal?

Yep, I am VERY blessed to be within driving distance of @cruisermatt and if traffic wasn't sooooo bad I could probably make it in 30 minutes!

Last time he walked me through, and it was VERY impressive! All years and models of Land Cruiser. Converting some to power steering, converting others to a V8 + automatic transmission, extending the wheelbase of one to accommodate the other changes, it was amazing. No matter where you live, I highly recommend having your rig transported to @cruisermatt to have your work done. Quality work, NO DOUBT.

Wheels
Nobody spoke up wanting the set (free if you cover boxing & shipping). So, I'm letting 1 go to someone wanting it for their spare and they are covering shipping. If anyone else wants one, let me know. If they are still here in a week I'll call the scrap guy to come get them:

I will list this in the classifieds too, but I have 4 OEM wheels with the hubcap tabs off of my 1971 (build date Dec '70) if someone wants them. If not, I'll have the scrap man come and get them. They are riveted, and @cruisermatt let me know they would not clear the disc brake stuff if I ever want to do front disc brakes, and I definitely want to do that some day and A/C. So I ran over to cruisermatt's and picked up 4 OEM welded ones. Oddly enough, my spare was welded. I've heard '71 was the year they were making that switch. These would need to be sand or media blasted. Every time the tire machine broke the bead seal a cloud would puff out, and it's the first time since I was a kid seeing inner tubes inside a tire (all 5 had them). I was able to wire brush 1 to see the '71 date code. After a few minutes of trying to expose the date code on the other 3 I decided it's too hot & humid, and I've had too many back surgeries. I'm not really looking to make money on them. If someone wants to cover the cost of having UPS (or whoever you prefer) box them up and ship them and a couple bucks for gas, that's good enough for me.
