I checked CCOT
Here's a lesson that I learned 20 or 25 years ago: Don't buy important parts from CCOT. They're fine for sun visors and calendars but not for brakes or steering and other stuff that your life might depend on.
Lug nuts are pretty important and not a piece I would want to cut corners on.

Cool cruisers of taiwan

My lug nuts are all terrible, really rusted. I checked CCOT but they wanted $5.92 each for a total of $159.84 (plus shipping) to replace all 27 (all 24 on the ground and the 3 on the spare). No way! So I checked City Racer and for 27 it is $67.50 (plus shipping). So I checked Toyota Parts Deal and it would be $94.20 plus shipping. I checked O'Reilly and it would be $80.73 plus tax. I looked at some on Amazon and the price is good, 24 for $19.54 but it also says "Frequently returned due to poor size or fit", so I thought I would check with you guys. Ebay looked like only 24 packs. Any recommendations?
I am a BIG fan of City Racer.

I have found the parts to be excellent quality, the prices very reasonable, and the customer service to be exceptional.

My opinion only, but City Racer is my go-to source for FJ40 parts.

BTW, I love the Freeborn Red. Your rig will look awesome when finished!

@FloridaLife 90942-01007 is what I used for my early 66 but I think it's the same for most 40's. Check the parts catalog for your year - it's listed as Nut, hub I think.
It is the same # for 1980 FJ40 and what I got last summer - Toyota online just finished a 25% off sale, maybe wait for the next offering and jump on that??? And if you want City Racers, go for it, your Rig, you get to define what right looks like.

Either way, they will be hidden under the hub caps.

Thank you! Good points.

Going Topless
I saw a video of 2 young men working together to take the top off an FJ40 to go for a ride. They struggled with it and looked like a 3rd person would have been very helpful.

I would like to rig something up in my garage to be able to easily take the top off by myself when I want to go topless. Some pulleys or chain hoist and stuff.

If any of you have rigged up something to do this in your garage, please tell me about it and post some photos.

Thank you.

I have a 100% fail rate on ebay and amazon. Last time I tried a set of lugnuts on ebay and they showed up missing 2. FFS. No recourse, vid of unboxing, etc. Amazon is 90% chinese knockoff crap UNLESS you can truly find a trustworthy seller.
I prefer to deal with folks who work on and care about these rigs AND their customers. Toyota Matt, Matt's Offroad, City Racer, Cruiser Teq, SOR...

Fantastic! Thank you!

Transmission
Does anyone know of an automatic transmission that will bolt up to a 1978 2F engine and transfer case? Or 1 that can be bolted up with an adapter plate? I'm just wondering because of all the surgeries I've had (including both hips & low back just to name a few) years ago, I know that some day it may become too painful to drive a manual.
Fantastic! Thank you!

30 years ago I did some backwoods engineering and bought 2 landscaping timbers for $4, a couple of tow straps cheap, and a chain hoist. I created a lift to lift the body of my 1934 Coupe off the frame so I could get to every inch of everything and restore it. I think I spent less than $20 to do it. LOL. One of these hoist on Amazon sounds way better, and I may opt for the electric version. I see one they say will lift 1450 pounds. That could come in handy with other stuff too.

Wheels
Got all 5 wheels & tires off the FJ40 and took them to get the tires taken off so I can have the wheels cleaned, blasted, and prepped for paint or powder coating. Those old tires put up a fight, but they got them off. Much to my surprise, they all had inner tubes. I never even thought about that. I haven't seen that since I was a kid. I was also curious to see if my wheels were riveted or welded. I looked at the spare first, and it was welded. But all 4 wheels that were on the ground were riveted. 🤔

The 4 may be your original wheels. There should be a date code stamped into them along or near the inner center line, under the rubber bumper for the tube if that is still there.

I know the FJ40 originally came with 205/75 R15 tires. Are any of you still rolling with that size, or have most of you gone with something bigger?
