Man you have had a rough go with your cruiser. I bet you can rebuild the 3fe blind folded by now. MIght as well go with a 305 or 350. Same fuel mileage more power. Way more power.

It's not the truck, it's me. I'm too rough on stuff.

Why rule out the 6BT?
Because I like that the 4BD2T would give me a lot more room in the engine bay. Look at @GLTHFJ60 's engine bay with the 4BT, I would have my motor positioned very similarly.

And actually, after seeing how nicely your swap turned out, I have changed my opinion on the 6BT. It would certainly make my transmission adapting a lot more simple as I already have the NV4500 in place.

Damn, now you have me thinking.

just jumped in here and read through, I really enjoy the perseverance through it and keeping the truck going, especially interested in seeing the roof swap. I've seen a few on different chassis' and was always curious about the welding due to various layers.

But the REAL reason I posted is for the red 944. Yours?

That's my dad's. It's now a 250hp, 2500-lb (loaded) SCCA E-production car.

I've looked through GLTHFJ60's thread and the 4BT is a great swap so I'm not criticizing it at all. If I would have had a 4BT on hand that is probably what I would have used. I'm sure the new Cummins 2.8 is more civilized than the 6BT but the power and simplicity of the 6BT is hard to beat. I consistently get 20-22 mpg on BFG MT's with more power than I'll ever need. Sure I could tear up the drive line if I wanted to but that can be done with about anything if you try hard enough.

Some good mechanics have looked over my 6BT swap and love it. The engine fits like a glove with the SOA lift. It is louder than a 2F but who wouldn't expect that? Off road I can lug it down as slow as I need and on road it will go faster than I need to go in a 60 and accelerate on any hill I have found.

Right, I've driven 2500 Rams and such so I'm familiar with the performance, my one big holdup is the length as I want a lot of room to run big intercooler piping and such. That's what I meant to look at his thread, he has like 8-10" between the font of his motor and the back of his fans, I like that a lot. It's not an absolute deal-breaker though.

I have to try to get my EGT over 1000 degrees F. Normal driving is about 700F and that is not babying it. I'm running an aftermarket turbo that greatly reduces the lag. You can hear it whine more than stock but boost comes on hard around 1500 rpm.

The 6BT is awesome in a 60/62. I'll discuss it with you if you want.

You ever think of a compound turbo set up I a 4bt?

It gives you room for big intercooler piping at the front.

Replacement crankshaft. Thanks @GLTHFJ60 . Block is currently off at machine shop getting hot tanked, possibly line bored. Didn’t think to take a picture but the crank was seized in the block after I got the rods off it due to me using too much RTV on the last main cap.

Anymore thought on the future engine plans for it?

Diesel
But for now I’m just going to keep this 3FE going and fine tune the truck as it is. I don’t want to do an engine swap until everything is ready to support that (suspension/drivetrain etc)

I’m also going to be focusing a lot more on the body work and making it more streetable, selectable locker going in the rear is a serious want.

Got a replacement fender on from @dnp
I also have the roof swap on the agenda and a good rear passenger door. Then full respray.

I also have a fresh chrome grille and headlight surrounds as well as all new side marker lights turn signals etc.

FINALLY got the NV4500 torn down to investigate the fifth gear failure (that happened in May).
Didn’t find what I was expecting.

Although the fifth gear mainshaft nut was loose, it was still fully threaded and the gear hadn’t gone anywhere.
What happened is the snap ring on the back of the countershaft fifth/reverse cluster came off. Which explains why not only did I loose fifth it would get stuck in the reverse.

Other parts found in the main case with the snap ring. These are the clips for the 5th/reverse selector ring. Seriously glad none of this got caught in the gears.

Full set of Nv4500 rebuild parts ordered... getting serious deja vu here from last summer.

New to me Warn M8000 and mount I designed and had waterjet cut... 3/8” thick to make up for the big cut-outs.
