I usually try to avoid water and mud like that. Besides, that mud isn’t even deep enough to hit the intake pickup.
And I would have ripped the snorkel off on a tree branch by now anyway.

A snorkel might propel me to too high of an Overland Rank. I’m not sure I’m ready for that kind of responsibility yet.

They are pretty tough but not for everyone. Got one on my relatives fj60. It worked great, had water above the door handles for substantial periods. Some dude floating down river in a tube bumped into the side of the rig while out in the water lol.

If you can't cross a section of water with just a bow wake then....your too deep.

Almost done with the transmission rebuild. At least all the hard parts are done.
Also, I’m almost certain the reason this thing didn’t go together right the first time i built it was that I didn’t have one of the gears seated on the mainshaft all the way. Which caused a 0.100” issue, which explains why it would still go together but be super tight and hard to shift and wear out bearings extremely fast.

Also this time I am a lot more cautious with the endplay. Checked it with an indicator and shimmed the countershaft to 0.002” of endplay (spec is to be within 0.002-0.006”, closer to the 0.002” side).
Still need to check this for the mainshaft.

And, done besides driving the new fifth gear and tail housing on (still waiting on new gear.) All new bearings, syncros and snap rings.

Next up, 4:1 gears and new bearings for the splitcase.

Well this was super weird to me.
I got my new 5th gear in the mail and got out the mega hammer and thick wall tube to drive it on, and to my suprise the gear slipped right on with zero effort. This is astonishing after I’ve spent literally dozens of hours at attempts of pulling them off.
Maybe I was just unlucky and had a gear that was out of tolerence. I can see how they could slide off for people if they are normally this loose, couldn’t say the same about the old unit. I’m going to weld the retaining nut to the gear as an extreme preventative measure.

SO are you getting rid of the doubler and going with just the 4:1 in the split case? Or you just going for better highway gearing and lower gear options?

Keeping the doubler AND putting 4:1 in the split case. The 4:1 gears make the high-range a 10% underdrive which is basically like having 4:56 gears (which I need). It will be 184:1 in double low, which after the gears I expect to use very infrequently. In my opinion 100-120:1 is perfect for about 95% of REAL wheeling, but there are situations where 184:1 or 51:1 (my other two options with first gear, as well as having all the other gears in the transmission giving me a ton of options) will be preferred.

Although my fifth gear loss wasn’t caused by the traditional retaining nut failure, the retaining nut was loose.
There are a couple of different versions you can buy to prevent this but I like my version better.

What kind of gasket goo do you use? Have you ever heard of "the right stuff?" Seals like a hot dam and I have NEVER had a leak since I switched. Its black, and you know the saying "Once you go black, you never go back."
