I found a good deal on bongs but, I only had $70 so I went for the smoker. Cool and useful tool btw! I confirmed that the throttle shaft is the cause of the vac leak. Now I need to decide what to do about it.

1. take a few hits off the smoker
2. re consider the bong
3. press in new throttle shaft bearings after breaking in the new bong
4. trollhole
5. sniper
6. ?

Open to reasonable suggestions :smokin:

Can you post a link up to the smoker you purchased on Amazon?

And where was your port of entry for the smoke?

The smoker: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C7MKZPK3?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

I used a vac line coming off the top left manifold for an entry point, took me a few tries as I had to plug the top of the carb (I ended up using plastic and rubber bands). Smoker comes w a few attachments that can be used for exhaust and other larger openings. easy setup and works very well.

If you’re slightly interested in a Sniper…. I can only say that I was asuninformed about fuel injection as possible..I loved the concept and threw money at it. It took me 1 1/2 years to decide to install it..turns out to be so great I’m my case that I would recommend it to anyone willing to listen

I didn't realize the cost of this potential pivot. I think I am gonna keep pecking away with this old Aisin. Ive heard that they were under idle jettied so they are notorious for having low vac. I am gonna see if a slightly larger idle (Slow jet ) will help this. the shaft leak is common on these carbs and I not sure if the effort for a new bearing will make a material difference. I am well over the 5K budget but, on this particular project its more time than $. The trollhole option seems ok but ive heard plenty of issues with these knock off carbs too. The slow roll continues ;)

That's the thing. If it was cheap, easy and worthwhile, we'd all be re-bushing that shaft. Try an experiment? Put a fingerful of heavy axle bearing grease over both ends of that shaft, start the engine see if there's a measurable change in vacuum. Take it for a drive. Any better? Wipe off any remaining grease.

Not a bad suggestion.! My first thought was to just try to re-grease the bearings but that would be way too much effort and may only help temporarily. Packing grease on over the ends would be much easier. I'll def give that a shot. I've removed the carb to mail it out to get that vac port installed....

@Tomba I was re-reading a few things on your carb situation. I have what I now refer to as a “community carb.” It is the Weber carb that was on my ‘75 2F before I added the Sniper to it. @MatthewMcD was having issues with his 40 and I thought if he had another option to rule out his speed problems, it may rule out something. The net result for Matt was completely un-related..after a few weeks he sent me the carb back. It is still in that box, unopened and on a shelf.

What I’m getting at is IF YOU’D LIKE.. I would send it to you to try and see what results you can achieve with it. If it works, you can decide what you need to do next in the progression.

Here’s a little background:
When I got my 75 a few years ago, the Weber carburetor was already on it. And frankly, it ran exceptionally well. It was also paired with a performance distributor DUI in the truck ..it started and ran well. It did have a slight hesitation occasionally which I attribute to the timing setting on the distributor. I bought my sniper the same week my FJ 40 was delivered. It sat on my shelf for over a year before I decided to install it. My truck ran great. I had nothing. I was really looking to improve other than the fact that when it sits for two weeks starting, it is a pain in the butt. The fuel has dried out. It takes a while to crank, and then it starts and runs as well as it did.

The sniper solved that issue. In the summer and so far this winter I turned on the key, let the fuel charge develop and it starts right up for me. No differences from the Chevy suburban my wife drives…This is a real blessing. so therefore, I am a member of this terrific Land Cruiser community with so many guys here as good as family.

Think about it ….if you’d like PM me I will happily drop it in the mail to you. Try it, use it. See where youre tinkering will get you and when you’re done with it after a few weeks. Send it back.

I agree with you regarding the cost of the sniper, it was pricey. I have no explanation for the desire to buy it other than I had some wild idea ( and I just LOVE @zerotreedelta series on YouTube ) and no knowledge of fuel injection. It has been an experience I truly enjoy. I also installed the Holley hyper spark ignition system, which was almost as costly as the sniper set up.

I think in the long run: had I measured the timing on the original Weber and DUI distributor, a slight twist of the distributor would have amazingly improved performance and I probably would have an additional $4000 in my pocket…but again I will say, I’m very pleased with the way this has worked out.

Something to think about, regardless, the offer is out there.

@knuckle47 I have to agree with your sentiment re this forum, its truly been a blessing with all the ppl in the sty willing to help and offer all sorts of information and more. This is just another wonderful example of this. I really appreciate your offer and after I piece this latest effort back together and see if it that works,(or not) I may take you up on your offer.

I honestly was not prepared for the amount of time/effort that this piece of the pig puzzle would take. The good news is I know quite a bit more about potential issues with these original carbs that I did before I started as well as a fair idea on how to solve them. That said, its just one small piece and obviously is related to valves, timing, dizzy etc. Also, After reading @Aloha Jen 's recent post about the new Amazon carb, the few brain cells I have are spinning about what's gonna be the final final here re this. I'll be in touch either way. Again Really appreciate the offer. 🙏

I'm off to a visit a few sty members :) :):)
