on closer inspection on my fender repairs i noticed it doesnt line up with the bolt holes in the rocker. my replacement rib is straight rather than curved like the factory. im hoping i can get away with making some relief cuts in spots along the rib that will let me add a bend to it. once the right shape ill weld the cuts up.

fender repairs continue...

Are you sure you don't have a charge light wire at the reg plug? It may appear to be ~12v ignition as the alternator provides a ground path to complete the circuit on this wire when not charging. The charge light may be shared, eg may double as a "filter" light on the BJ73 loom with a diode.

possibly. do you think a continuity test between the plug and the charge light at the dash would confirm?

need a better video of the 4:1 crawler gears.. in 1st low 2wd i got out to throw the kids in the back. not a long clip but kids today only live in 5secs at a time. ill try and get a better video of it tomorrow.

Yeah, just be

Yeah, potentially ;)

Just be aware that there's likely a diode so your continuity test may only work in one direction! Once you've found it, ground that wire via to see if the light turns on (preferably via the smallest fuse you have at hand just in case you've made an oopsie)

I'm not familiar with the internal functions of the alternator, some people say that an alternator won't work without the light wired, but I assume this doesn't apply to the the 3+1 Toyota alternators as they use a separate Ign wire. I guess if people say alternators need the light to be wired, some alternators (eg types 5 & 7 in the diagrams you posted) are fed ignition power via the idiot light, and feed ~12v back so the light turns off when the alternator is working (with a diode so it doesn't feed back into the entire ignition system). In this case you'd want to pay attention to the bulb check function as a dead globe could cause a failure to charge!

Favourite party trick is to go 4L and just get out of the car and start walking away when I have a green passenger (off-highway of course, for any of the constabulary reading this). The response is always priceless.

Depending on whether you're a perfectionist or not, sense wire ideally should be straight to battery via a fuse so it doesn't get voltage drop which could cause the battery to under-charge (eg from memory on a 40 series loom the WL wire at the regulator just T's the the fat WL charge wire), and I'd consider adding a fresh fat charge wire to the battery (I think my new int reg alternator I bought for my 15BFT was 2-3x the output of original ext reg alternator)
