I have to revise my answer now.

NOT with a stock gear on my D.U.I. distributor!!!

AAAAAUUUUGH!!!

Now that I have my OEM gear on though... I'd be willing to try it.

I'm driving 1200 miles every 2nd or 3rd weekend in my 45 pickup looking for a good 60 series. Top up the fluids ,crank up the stereo and off you go. So what if it's a bit uncomfortable ,it's worth it in the waves and the conversations it starts. If it breaks it's easy to work on. No hesitation going anywhere in it.

I bought mine from someone who had it stored for a couple of months and drove it back home 300 km, then the other day did a lot of distance to get the feelings right!
I own a '85 bj70 and had no problem with it!
I'd go across Canada for sure in it

well fellas it's getting close. I'll be leaving this friday. I am rebuilding the front axle and some other things. I feel I am on the home stretch. Tomrr shoud have it all done  .

Hello,
I just returned from picking up my latest purchase. 1974 FJ40 was purchased from a guy in Sierra Vista, AZ, near the US/Mexico border. Drove for 2 days, all the way to Santa Cruz,CA nearest I can figger it was almost a thousand miles, due to non-interstate routing. The only thing I wish I had was a hand throttle for a poor mans cruise control. The odometer was inop, so I have no way of knowing the exact mileage. I have developed a new technique for avoiding traffic, drive through the desert during the hottest part of the day in a 'cruiser @ 60MPH. The 'cruiser just chugged along at 60MPH like it was springtime temps. H2O temp never wavered from 195 deg, oil press steady @ 45psi. Did all of the above without as much as a screwdriver or crescent wrench onboard. Didn't burn more than 1/2 quart of oil or any coolant at all.
Do it again? YUP! after recouping without a doubt.
Eric

drove it 500 miles today... adelaide to melbourne.

37 litres of lpg per 100 K's (not miles)

which is terrible

but i'm feeling good after the drive, good castor meant i didn't have to fight it, and good seats means i can still walk...

but a radio would have been nice

I frequently drive 1,000 miles each way to bird hunt. This is in my 60. Before I sold my 40, I would drive it alll over the West too... 500 miles ain't nuttin'.

I was hoping to take my cruiser 100 miles from home this weekend and I am a bit worried. I only get about 8mpg and the cruiser will quit running once 10 gallons has been used from the tank. So I am gonna be filling up a lot and paying through the teeth for the trip.

I'll have a bike with me though so if it breaks down I won't be stranded. I'd do 500miles on the bike sooner than I'd do it in the cruiser.

I will be driving from Denver to Moab and back in september.
But with all GM drivetrain, you can get parts anywhere, plus the Honda prelude seats are nice, and the GM A/C.
Then a trip to the rubicon soon.

made it half way 500 miles. I love the beach.

My maiden voyage in mine was 800 miles, I flew in and drove home. 65 mph with nothing but the stock AM radio. That changed REAL quick.

Well as the author of this post I wanted to thank everyone for there post. It was you 268 people who voted that they would do it along with the great stories that convinced me to take the cruiser on the 1000 mile journey when before I was skeptical of even a 60 mile trek. Thank you.

The journey turned out to be something I will remember for a lifetime and be able to tell my kids and grandkids about.

It was amazing seeing all the people staring at it and taking photos. Had lots of people who would walk up and ask me about it or just give me the thumbs up.

The cruiser ran flawlessly the whole way at 65mph and the top down. If you would like to see more pics and about the Outer Banks they are here.

good work

Bwahhaahaa.

Now I'm changing my vote. I don't want to drive that far with the gd crck in my water jacket.

sorry to hear. I'm with ya, cracks suck, my cruisers frame cracks are being welded on as we speak.............not going even a mile right now :frown:

I have had several days of driving 2-3 hours to trails, driving 4 hours of trails, driving 2-3 home (and plan on doing it again this weekend). Some days are 9-10 hours non stop except to pee, and that is wirh some serious truck working miles. Also, when I bought it, I drove well over 500 miles home with it (10 hours). I bought it to use it, so I use it.

Mine is a gas hog - think it is the 4 barrel Edlebroc on a Chevy 350 - that gets about 8-10 mpg, but I have 2 tanks and a jerry can in case. a good stero rocks with iPod connection.

another reasons to drive it. you will regret it if you do not more than if you do I believe. I always use it when i can, which is why I bought it. glad it worked out for you. nice photo!
