Bought my 83 BJ42 in Miami and drove it to NC in 2 days, it was lonely for my wife was following me in her car while I was still trying to get used to RHD steering and shifting!!

My daily driver is a 78 FJ45. I drive back and forth 4.5 hours each way to work every two weeks and all over town when I'm home. I can't wait to drive home when my shift is over. I just drove my new 81 BJ42 home from Vancouver to Prince George (500 miles) My wife cant wait for me to fix it up for her to drive. You got to drive'em.

I tried that once.............and i believe you remember the results :) maybe the beach would have been a little easier trip for her.

Old news but I pieced together my SBC from the good parts of two and some new bearings and stuff. Added a hitch receiver and towed a uhaul from Central Texas to Ogden Utah making a camping and wheeling stop in Moab along the way last year. The poor truck then sat for about 16 months with my wife starting it for me every couple of months. The carb was leaking so my father in law rebuilt it just before I picked it up and drove it back the same distance.

I had to replace the alternator in Moab cuz the bearing started squealing (er, screaming) but other than that she did great. Oh, then I lost a shackle nut and bushing deep into Gold Bar in Moab, just used some rubber floor matting to make a bushing and an extra wheel lug nut to thread on and had been driving on that for the last 2,000 miles until recently.

Grand total of around 3,000 on those two trips. So 500? meh. Breakdowns are just part of the adventure. Just remember to go prepared for em with tools and parts.

I had to trim it down a little more than in this pic but it got the job done. And when you get to have a view like this it makes it all worth while.

Close to 2000 miles in 27 hrs with 31x10.50 tires and 4.11 gears. I'd not hesitate to do it again. I've got a 350 chevy though.

I drove mine from Lake Tahoe NV. to Bandon ORE. in 10 hrs no wipers. snowing through Shasta raining in ore. Rain-X worked great. Starter wire got burned on the exaust fried my alternator.

I drove my 83 FJ40 from Oregon to New York, to Key West, Florida to LA and back to Oregon one summer back in 1995. I've also driven my HJ47 back and forth from Santa Fe to Boulder, Colorado at least 18 times, and up to Montana twice, down to Phoenix 7 or 8 times, and to California once. To Moab several times, and all over New Mexico.

Here is Australia, I have driven my 84 FJ40 LX up to the Flinders Ranges twice and to Parchilna Gorge once. I've driven her to Melbourne once, and to Ayre Peninsula, out to Coffin Bay and up to Coober Peedy once. All they need is a good stereo, and Cruisers will go wherever they are pointed. Trailers are for J**ps.

Cheers,

Josh

Drove a couple of hundred the other day. The Bose headphones really helped.......There is a huge difference in the design and ride over the years. My 80 pures like a kitten even with the lift kit and bigger tires. Bottom line. The 40 is cool for around town and it draws a crowd everywhere I go. It is also easier to work on with less emissions and electrical issues to deal with but for the long haul and if I had a choice, it would be the 80 hands down.

It only counts if you have a fishing rig and a margarita machine

drove my baby from medford Oregon to sacremento California was a little slower than I would have liked but the cruiser charm makes up for speed and aerodynamics:shotts:

Drove my 1970 FJ55 from California to Colorado and back, a great ride and 2 nice mule deer came back with me.
I now have a 1977 FJ40. going to be doing a lot of the same with it. I love the way a cruiser motor sounds when it is cruisin down the open road. One thing I have learned though is to not worry about keeping up with traffic. Cruisers do not have to. FJ motors have a very long stoke so keep the revs down. It amazes me how may times on this forum members ask and talk about how fast they can or do drive their cruisers. Drive slow and them enjoy your FJ for what it was intended, some offroad or snow, etc. That will impress those sports car owners. let them drive fast and when they reach the snow and you catch up you can leave them behind you as they are putting on their tire chains.:p
