I had my Quadrajet built by SMI. I'd give them about a 90% on the rebuild (had a leak or two that needed addressing), but the tune was pretty much spot on. It basically ran on the primaries until you really laid into it, then the throttle response and change-over to the secondaries was damn close to a fuel injected vehicle (it just sounded way cooler).

I'm still debating between a carbed/flat tappet 350 (the easy route) and a fuel-injected Vortec (the probably smart but more expensive/complicated route).

You actually recommended SMI (or least mentioned them) to me. Same with the big name guy who offers rebuild kits (Cliff Ruggles?). Lets just say I gave rebuilding my own and well was way in over my head. Plus Im pretty sure the previous owner was in the carb before as it had some funky stuff going on with it. So i decided to just go with a "new" rebuilt one.

And dont worry I did a lot of what you did. Comparing rebuilds vs crate carb'd engines vs LS engines vs who knows. I was browsing craigslist everyday which didnt help (the auto parts section). I finally did my normal, forget researching, and just bought what I knew would be "easiest" and work which was the adapter for the Gen I and II SBC to H42.

You've got a good eye Jim. The stiff OE short stack leaf packs were replaced with 56" long Bronco leaf springs front and rear on relocated shackle mounts. The ride is comfortable and the off road flex is great. I run Rs9000 adj rate shocks to stiffen up for street & highway, then dial them all the way down for off road flexibilty.

We rust tub our frames and bulkheads are normally really good

They don't rust tubs... but... frames and bulkheads are notoriously bad for rust

true that. always said the only thing landy does well was the aluminium tub. downside to it is it bends for nothing, gets holes punched through it for nothing too.

was in a landy on a private game farm a while ago where they had a whole bunch of rhino in a 200 hA paddock. they were pretty tame and would all come up to the landy to look for food as the owner had the habit of feeding them. anyways, didnt take long for one of the Rhino to put her horn straight through the rear quarter panel. lifted the landy right off its back wheels, gave us and the rhino a fright, and left a hole that looked like a 20mm ap round had hit it. :meh:

yup, give me a cruiser any day of the week. a landy will get you out there, but a cruiser will get you home again

hey, would 305/70/16 cooper st maxx fit on my 2001 land cruiser with 1.25 spacers all around?
 
This evening I finished unpacking the latest acquisition for my upcoming '71 FJ40 upgrade, a drum parking brake split transfer case. It's from a European BJ45, with a 4J3175 code stamped on it, so a 10/84 production date. It'll be installed behind an H41 from an '84 HJ47. The new combo will replace the '78 H42/one piece transfer case that's currently in the vehicle behind a '76 2F.

The split case has a 34mm idler shaft, manual front drive engagement, and provisions for the 5th gear oiler cup.

Very nice! If that is @bhicks, his stuff is great. I have a few of his items for my 80. I highly recommend!
 
Added some LED brake lights up on the roll bar. Previous owner had some lights he had attached to the top that shown through the curved window. Never liked those. I wanted something attached to the roll bar if I ever remove the lid again. Very cheap lights from China, but were the form factor I was looking for. Wiring instructions said "Diagnose wires and connect correctly". Package had no indication as to what the three wires on the LED light did. I fiddled around with a battery until I figured out the wires.
