“I hear that 2F a-comin’,
It’s comin’ ‘round the bend,
It ain’t had the valves adjusted since I don’t know when,
Driver’s dropped it into third, foot mashed to the floor,
Eyes watering from exhaust fumes, bound for Pig Party 2024….”
Here's another rear shot of the same FJ40 - leading the SAS #1 Texas contingent over Stoney Pass on the way to Ouray. And a Stoney Pass bonus shot from the late '80s - that's as far as we could go that day in our stock '84 FJ60 even with chains...
You all are welcome in Southern Illinois too. The Shawnee NF and Crab Orchard NWR are here. So is Voodoo Cruisers 😁. We road trip long distances in our pig but use a small trailer. It makes a big difference with useable interior space. Good luck...
I think that’s somewhat self explanatory.
You can comfortably drive slightly higher speeds and still run the engine at lower RPMs. So you’ll get slightly better fuel economy and reduced engine wear.
And it’s nice to be able to drive the same...
We only got 6" of heavy, wet snow this morning in the mountains west of the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico. Luckily our 40 year-old son was able to come by and help with the shoveling. It's getting a bit harder now that I'm in my '70s - I...
Well, I "think" I've fixed the leak.
Step one was chucking the torque values in the manual.
You aren't stretching bolts here. You are just snugging them down onto the gasket and then a titch more. So I just turned them down until the cover was...
Yep! And BTW, Land Cruisers do look great in paved parking areas, especially in National Parks and Monuments.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument - 2017 leg of FJ40 Cross Country Expedition. @mesa man
While many of you have seen these photos before, they are pertinent to this thread and some of the newer guys may not have seen them. I'm now thinking this was more like 1990 as the smallest kid was born in January of '88 and I remember the kids...
I would like to follow up this thread with a solution for anyone running into the same issue. The TR22425 is too short and after a few different belt sizes, I found TR22434 worked the best.
Thank you so much for the recommendations - we will be sure to check out the kid friendly hike. Our 20 week old will need awake time and we are aiming to pull over during awake time for hikes and such.
This is why I love this forum - incredible...
Looks like a great route! I really like the Notom-Bullfrog Road to Burr Trail section, I first did that almost 30 years ago. Too bad they had to pave a good bit of the Burr Trail. There is a nice kid friendly side hike in the Waterpocket Fold...
Thank you Tucker. Hard to believe we first met in 2016 when I was heading to the FJ Summit (with Mcguire). And that week was when the whole idea of doing the Solid Axle Summit originated. And as you said…”A lot of stuff has happened since...
I have a '71 frame that I'll be removing the crossmember from soon. I have a new replacement part that welds in further back on the frame. I'm in northern New Mexico.
I've got at least one that I could refurbish, but I don't have any good dual diaphragm advancers. I think I have a new aftermarket single diaphragm advancer that I could modify and install.
Another option is the USFS Buffalo Pass Campground, on the pass just to the south of Cochetopa Pass. It's a small uncrowded campground. We stayed there on the way to one of the SAS events. I spoke briefly with one of the other campers who had a...
As @matzell indicated, it sure does. I have another H41 in my '76 FJ40, mated to a 3-speed transfer case. Other than a mini-truck/Tercel power steering set-up and the transmission/transfer case swap, it's all original with just over 66,000 miles...
We drove to Bear Town last year on September 2 and didn’t run into a single person. We also drove to Heart Lake towards the middle of September (during the middle of the week) and we ran into one neighbor getting firewood.
Back in 1986 I drove the family in our '84 FJ60 over Stoney Pass from Silverton to Creede. We didn't see another vehicle from the time we left Howardsville, which is a few miles north of Silverton, until we got to Rio Grande Reservoir. And IIRC...
