I’ve got a spare axle to strip down, a newer 3rd to go in, swap it into the truck with some shims & new spring centre bolts, and then finish assembly with the disc knuckles off my original axle.

When I built my 40 it would be a weekend job… not so much now, almost 30 years later.

Victoria’s not that far from Stanwood! I could convince my wife we need a couples weekend away and that I have some intimate time together planned…. She’d get suspicious when she sees a spatula, rubber gloves, 2 rolls of paper towels and a 4 pound tub of moly grease.

Victoria’s not that far from Stanwood! I could convince my wife we need a couples weekend away and that I have some intimate time together planned…. She’d get suspicious when she sees a spatula, rubber gloves, 2 rolls of paper towels and a 4 pound tub of moly grease.

I’ve got a Costco pack of bounty and extra-large nitrile gloves already. I have a couple spatulas in the kitchen that can easily be replaced… and grease is easily obtained from a number of nearby parts stores.

Digging out the spare parts would be the most challenging part… but easily enough done.

One of these days I’ll need to convince my gear-head neighbor to rent me his cabin by the lake. He says he wants to Airbnb it… but doesn’t want his new 1200 sqft “cabin” get trashed. It would make a great spot for a “retreat” and lots of wheeling nearby.

Or take a drive to see you… but then I’d have to convince the border guards I’m not importing parts or having paying a shop to do work down there.

Installed a 10lb residual valve for the rear drum circuit. It seems the disc/drum 80 MC needs it when running it on an early 40 rear drum setup. Solved the double pump braking.

That looks like a lot of work to install… wouldn’t rear disc brakes be easier to install?

JK… glad it worked out. That’s probably part of the reason my rear drums were so fussy about adjustment. I’m sure the old residual valves were not very effective. I did run the front 10 lb valve for a couple years before I learned that it shouldn’t be there (and those pads lasted 95k miles).

JK… glad it worked out. That’s probably part of the reason my rear drums were so fussy about adjustment. I’m sure the old residual valves were not very effective. I did run the front 10 lb valve for a couple years before I learned that it shouldn’t be there (and those pads lasted 95k miles).

Thankfully I already had a brake union in that spot so it was a pretty easy swap. If not then yeah, welding on rear disc mounts would have been more enjoyable that making yet again another brake line system to incorporate this. hahaha

what exactly does the 10lb residual valve do Chase ?

is it like a one-way door that when it closes that retains the DOT 3 fluid pressure / or the fluid itself from escaping , so when you apply the brake pedal again , it creates a instant force applied pressure to the 8 wheel cylinder pistons on the axle ?

Yeah it keeps a 10lb pressure in the rear line. The issue was the beefy springs on the rear drums were pulling back the pads a lot when I released the pedal. So I would have to pump the pedal twice to push the pistons in the wheel cylinders back out enough to apply real braking force. This way the valve retains some pressure and the pistons don’t retract too far when I release the pedal.

Just fill it with epoxy Hysol and sanded it

Many people recommended PC Products PC-7 Epoxy Adhesive Paste, Two-Part
I just use what I have.

I'd love to hear some feedback on this once you've got some miles on it. Assuming you're putting something over it, what are your plans?


Edit-I see you're down south, I guess there is no sense in asking how it helps retain any heat!

I have the original rubber floor mat. It has a couple cracks and a hole where your heel sits, but I have a plan to fix all that.

I am not planning to put the sound deadner in the back, although I am sure it would help. I will cut something like this and put it on the back floor.

I'm going to put this stuff on the back of the rubber mat where there is cracks and holes. It is super sticky!!

I put a layer of this below the rubber mat in the back. It did help reduce road noise, but unless you are willing to cover the rear wheel wells, you are always going to have some pretty significant road noise…. ( I also want to be able to easily remove it so I can dry out floor if moisture gets under the mat)

Yes, I agree... I am not going to do the rear wheel wells, but I will do the inside of the doors.

The Retrosound stereo for the FJ40 is a giant PITA to install. This is the 2A model, and it's pretty cheaply made - I think they all are. Everything that looks like metal is actually cheap plastic. I got the metal knobs because I thought the other parts were metal ... but no. It sounds fine though and it's nice to have a radio + Bluetooth in the truck. It plays loud enough to fix the rattles.

And some 5 1/4 speakers from Kicker in the SOR kick panel.

Also curious about the knobs. Which are those? Aside from build quality, it looks like they match the other interior bits pretty well. Would you agree?

They shipped it almost immediately and it only took a couple of days to arrive. When you specify your vehicle you get 3 radio options, and then some face and knob options. I picked the combo that seemed closest in looks to the OEM radio. Even with the plastic bits it does look pretty good and fits in well with the old school style. They also have a USB port that fits in the cig lighter spot (learned that from someone else on Mud).

Oh yeah, you need sand the corners round (rounder) on that backplate in order for the unit to fit into 40 radio hole.
