It looks like things will get crowded up front if you still have to fit an AC condensor?

I’m not quite to that part but yes I still need an AC condenser and 12” pusher fan to fit behind the grill.

Thank you Dave!

Did you prefer the 4BT over the OM617, I always thought the Mercedes was more civilized.

Don't know yet. My OM617 conversion is still not on the road just yet. Too damn hot (and busy with family) to finish it. I just miss the torquey 4BT.

I made some progress today.

Top and bottom mounts are bolted to the core support.

Close up of the rubber pads.

The ¾” aluminum extension bars are tapped for 8mm X 30 mm setscrews that thread into the intercooler on one side then have nuts to secure them to the top and bottom mounts. This also helps clamp the radiator in place.

Top view with the start of my intercooler plumbing.

Nothing too exciting mostly just busy work that seems to take 3X as long as the big stuff.

All the exhaust is in and tacked, I ran the tube over the rear cross member and relocated the rear body mount to keep everything up high and hidden, hard to tell much from the photo but it’s hard to fit my fat ass under there with a camera phone.

I spent about three weeks researching an air cleaner that I could fit in the area I had available that wasn’t a K&N style and would flow the CFM I needed, I found a Donaldson PowerCore that’s a 60% reduction in size from pleated cylindrical filter and still filters down to 2μ particle. The air box is mocked up to pull fresh air from the side vent and I hope to get it in steel this week, no photos of the box but this shows the filter size.

More info here: http://www.donaldson.com/en/engine/support/datalibrary/059806.pdf

I started patching the trans tunnel back together so I can use a 60 series cover and boots.

Nice work and I'm digging that gas pedal!

I can't remember if you stated your plans for the body, disassemble and paint or ?

I got my muffler tucked up high and now my floor gets pretty hot right there. What did you do to remedy that?

The entire exhaust system will be coated with Cerakote C-7600 black Glacier that is a thermal barrier then have sections that are close to something heat sensitive wrapped with an exhaust wrap. http://www.cerakotehightemp.com/resources/files/Cerakote Glacier Series Brochure 2013.pdf

Then I’ll use some sort of heat sound barrier on the body pan inside and out like mentioned here: Target carrier

Thank you Ron,

Yes after I mock everything up I will disassemble and weld everything, paint and reassemble!

Can you tell us more about that throttle pedal? I used pedal out of a 62 so I could use the 3FE cable, but after driving a while it hurts my knee...
The pedal is a Lokar Lakester, I had to space it ¾” off the fire wall to accommodate the heat barrier and sound deadening material. I used a Lokar LOK-TC-1000U throttle cable and it worked very well.

Thank you!

The wheels are Method MR304 Double Standard Wheels 15" X 8" with the 3.5" back spacing. They were cheap and available with the correct back spacing when I was ordering tires, I don’t like the fake bead locks and may change them out later but for now its low on the priority list.

Tires are BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain 33" X 12.50" X 15"

In my old 4BT powered 62, I had a Donaldson air cleaner unit. It was a tight fit!

That is a clean looking install!

I'm still wanting to fit in a second battery but I'm slowly giving up hope, this little four cylinder seems like its growing every time I look at it.

So probably too soon for you to say if you like the throttle position since you are not driving her, eh?

It looks adjustable, which is nice! I understand you had to space it out for insulation, but did the mounting holes happen to line up with the Pig holes in the firewall. I wonder if I could run this with my 3FE cable, or if the Lokar cable would be compatible w/ the 3FE.
Did you go w/ the raw pedal?

J Mack, just want to commend you on Excellent fab skills. A lot of people are afraid of Aluminum, Core support has some SWEET looking beads Tig or Mig? Its apparent you have a lot of experience.

Thanks Bob.

Pablo,

I like to rest my heel on the floor and lean the top of my foot on the trans tunnel and still reach the pedal somewhere around my big toe area, not sure if this makes sense but I can rest my shoe on the floor and tunnel and still reach the pedal on long stretches taking the pressure off my knee and I was able to set this pedal up without much effort to accomplish this. The Lokar cables are very nice and have bulkhead fittings at both ends so you can attach it to the firewall and eliminate the rubber grommet.

This is a picture of the spacer block I made, it covers the factory holes and spaces the peddle off the firewall so I can add the sound insulation.

Bob,

It’s been 20 years since I’ve had a reason to pick up the tools and it feels good to be out in the shop making sparks. It feels especially good to be getting complements from guys like yourself and I truly appreciate it!
