Thanks for the thoughts, my cooling issue is a nonissue “if” I drive the pig within its boundaries ~80MPH and not try to race everyone on the highway to the top of every mountain top pulling a trailer or fully loaded with a 35” tire strapped to the top.

This sounds very familiar; I think we drive very similar. I too can heat up my 4bt pretty well and have to remember to use restraint on my right foot. I usually don't do anything about the temps until I start seeing 225+F. In normal driving I'm anywhere from 180-205F depending on the time of year. I like to be in the mid 190s for more efficient burn of the diesel fuel.

Your normal mileage sounds great! I see similar reduced mileage when I push it (which seems to be every time I merge onto the freeway :smokin:) Do you use any additive?

I'm not too excited about the injector tips I'm running. I can't seem to find the perfect balance of a little black puff and monster power so I've got a moderate puff and mostly good power. It's just probably part of running a mechanical diesel. I can see myself making another injector tip change in the future. Tires and rear shocks will need attention first.

Has your pig ever experienced those speeds before the engine swap? A pig with a Cummins going 90 gives a new meaning to a screaming pig. :pig:

Ha, no.

The pig had a 350 SBC first gen engine when I bought it, the last time I drove with that engine we had to come back from an outing up a long steep hill (horseshoe bend) and the SBC was running 230° we were in second gear going 30 MPH not knowing if we were going to make it to the top. The 4BT goes up that same hill 75+ MPH running around 200° and never breaks a sweat.

Top speed was around 70 with the SBC but it had the factory 4 speed 4:10 gears and 33" tires then.

On a somewhat related note, I turned the fuel and boost down more (20 PSI max boost and no smoke) and the pig seems happier, I think the next out of town trip I’m going try this setup and see what the temps look like.

FYI: I was at 35 PSI max boost and a slight hint of smoke before the change.

I ordered a Keating tappet cover to hopefully cure my last oil leak, these guys sure do build a nice part.

I’ll get it Cerakoted and try to make some time to get it installed hopefully in the next month or two, I’m buried with real work and I need to remove the P-pump to replace this cover so it’s a job I’m not looking forward to.

Wow, that thing is gorgeous. It looks like it might reduce a little engine noise too. I know in the 6bt engine cycle they started to insulate that piece to help with some of the engine noise so a little more meat on that side cover could help. Probably not tons but perhaps something.

Good find! I've got one working pump out of two, so I'm sure it will give up at the right moment. I might buy one of these just for backup.

A little back story,

I found the old Trico unit in the back of one of the donor pigs and have no idea how old it was but it was compact and well-built so I was only planning to use it for mockup and replace it with new later.

With the hurried up schedule to make Cruiserfest it was one of the little details that moved down the priority list so I just put power to the old unit and hoped for the best, technically it’s still working but the pump is losing prime every once in a while and could be something as simple as debris in the suction line but I’m tired of dicking with stuff so I’m going to just replace it with new. I know I’ve read about guys looking for a good replacement washer bottle for the pig and thought I would share.

Well after hours of use my windshield squirtter’s quit working, two days of trying to identify the unit I had I found that the “Trico 11-102 Spray Windshield Washer Pump” is the washer reservoir and pump kit I used..

Amazon and Oreilly auto sells this kit if someone is looking for a compact replacement.

Does it plug right in to the factory plug, or do you have to F with it? I know someone said these are kinda F'd up how they ground?

Does it pug right in to the factory plug,

I threw the entire factory wiring harness in the trash and started over because I was tired of “F’ing” with it so I can’t really answer your question. This unit has two wires and a common plug so I would assume it’s a straight forward hook up on a factory pig..

We have had some ~ 100° days so I thought I would take advantage of the heat to test some theories on controlling the engine heat with the A/C running and driving up steep hills at speed.

I posted in another thread that I measured the pig grill opening and came up with about 88 in2 total open area so I removed the grill and drove the same roads as I had the day before at approximately the same time of day going approximately the same speeds, I’m averaging about 12° cooler without the grill (just above 208°) vs. with the grill (just above 220°) driving 70MPH with the A/C on up a long fairly steep hill.

My current electric fan has a rated CFM of 2500 CFM, I am trying to track down an OEM electric fan with a 3500CFM rating that can be bought locally cheap enough just for testing to see if I can duplicate the findings these guys are seeing on the Cummings powered pickups.

Looking for the 97 Volvo 850 fan he used in this DIY test.

One way or another I need to find a way to keep the temps in check with the grill on and A/C running

Not sure if it was mentioned, but have you looked Into ford Taurus fans. They run a two speed fan, 2800cfm on low 5600 cfm on high. It's a popular choice for import cars that are modded. And best yet, can be had cheap and plentiful.

After looking there is some different info on high speed cfm. Either way it's somewh were between 4500 and 5600. If you can make it fit it should do the trick. Btw. 3 wire fan is the one you want. Comes out of a 90-95 Taurus with a 3.8.
