You don't really want to get the frame high enough to sit under; once it's high enough to clear the transmission on the jack, it'll be a pain to reach up and get the top stuff connected. Any higher is a real PITA.

Word of advice: bolt the transfer on before you slide the transmission under the frame.
Duly noted. Just reacting to how convenient it was to pull and replace the trans this last month on Jimmy's lift. When I am working on this rig on the ground, I am like mid crunch. I may be a wee shy of an adonis but that is tough. I'll figure it out though as I am getting pretty far ahead of myself.

The 800 lb model is sufficient. The tilt-a-whirl adjustable base is super nice to have. I made a wood platform and ratchet strapped it all together.

exactly

Tx shelfboards must be more something than NC shelfboards, though; mine cracked under pressure. I had to resort to 3/4" plywood. Which also failed, but not until I was done with it.

I currently have a motorcycle jack on loan, which I do have to return but it has a flat pair of skids for a bike (or flat bottomed trans) to sit on. Worked fine for the J30 plus transfer, but the flat bottom of the A440F might be even easier. Main concern is the transfer throwing things off?

FWIW, the h42 swap served my fj62 quite well. If you use the long case version, then everything you do for mounting, etc, is all ready to go when you upgrade to the h55.

I’ve got a manual swap thread floating around here somewhere.

Great to know. I saw your thread somewhere but lost it. I shall keep a looking.

Re: Jacks... I'm going to ask around ATX for a rent borrow situation though I have seen them on CL from time to time...

I have a couple of folks in Austin that might be able to toss you a suitable jack for a bit. Not Cruiserheads, just Gearheads. ;)

sucks that’s you’ve had so much trouble. sorry to hear that. you WILL love the h55 whenever you get there. next to a diesel engine it was the best upgrade i’ve done.

Yeah, it sucks for sure. Would’ve liked to have put some miles on that tranny. Sure shifted nice when it was living life.
However, seeing the community rally is a pretty special thing.

Another just popped up:

The story repeats (sadly).

Ok.

I need to start a checklist so I guess I’ll start it here.

Other than the transmission, what is the hardest thing to obtain for an A440f to manual conversion?

trans isn't hard to find versus other bits
3F bellhousing cover
trans hump cover and boots
you need to decide if keeping vacuum transfer or going manual
or get a combo ready to bolt in from a few vendors

That's the exact same trans jack I used to pull my H42, made it really easy. I did have to jack the truck up a tad to get the shifter plate to clear the frame rail.

I make not only a pedal bracket but replica pedals as well. Still have to pull the 62 bucket to weld the bracket to it but a lot less expensive then buying and shipping a whole pedal assembly

Auto to manual conversion list
Here is a list that Jimmy shared with me. It’s outdated as far as prices go and it was for a customer so I cropped it to just the list of parts.

Naturally there are some caveats here but my mando calrissian Jimmy has done enough of these swaps that I’ll take this list as gospel for the most part.
