There's a story behind both the FJ62 and the name. First, the 62 - when I was in high school, my best friend's family got one new as the family car. I distinctly remember bumping into them in a Carl's Jr. parking lot and instantly falling for the two-tone paint and the overall vibe of the Land Cruiser. In a lot of ways, this truck is responsible for imprinting me with the LC bug. I've been messing with the idea of getting a 62 for at least the past 20 years, but I never had the mechanical skill, financial wherewithal, or the space to get my own until recently. So stoked for this truck to finally be here.

Next, the name. Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are the two lead characters in the movie White Christmas. Gen. Tom Waverly is their CO as they are fighting somewhere in Europe over Christmas 1944. Since Wallace (1970 BMW 2002) and Davis (2008 BMW 135i) are here, it was only fitting that the 62 gets the honor of that name, politics of its current bumper stickers aside. It was a Maryland resident its entire life after all.

I have absolutely zero plans for it right now, aside from cleaning it up and assessing rust. Rear C-channels are swollen up a bit, and it has a few spots starting up on the roof. Doors and rockers look pretty solid. It's filthy and needs a vacuum really bad, but the plan is for a slower burn to evaluate at least for now. We all know how that goes. :)

Nice truck. Congratulations. Now tear off those stickers before @ToyotaMatt sees them.

We get all the good Maryland trucks here.

P.S. - Replace with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye stickers for that 'White Christmas' vibe....

Washed and briefly assessed. Parts list so far:
- Dash pad and bezel. I don't really think the dash pad is that necessary even though it's all cracked, but I want to get one while it's still available new. Dash bezel is cracked from a bad aftermarket stereo install. May go for my old standby 1998 Camry head unit plus Crux bluetooth install.
- Front and rear bumpers and caps. These are thrashed and still available.
- Rear plate light.
- Horn contact. Getting a "whee-whee" when turning the wheel. Can only imagine it's that. Plus it's a cheap fix, $7 bucks or something.
- Antenna mast. Unobtainium motor works well at the dash switch.
- Front seat belts refubished. Webbing is cut in a couple places.
- Rodney flush the trans and clean out the pan. May install external trans cooler. I think the AT temp light came on after 5 min of driving.
- Needs a hood latch, one on there now is busted.
- Clean crap load of gunk under the hood. PO kept good records of maintenance but there are a couple leaks under there, no idea what they are but will clean and reassess.
- Wiper blades
- Oh yeah, CA smog and registration. Lol.

That's about it for now. PO did an R134 conversion back in 2020, and AC blows nice and cold. Needs oil change soon. Starts and drives just fine. Needs an alignment. Brakes are a little scary, but records indicate recent service so could just need a fluid flush or a new master, not sure which. Headlights work, e-brake works, radio, dome light and dash clock do not (fuse maybe). New-ish starter, battery, rad service. Shocks probably need replacing, date to 2004. Smells like an old Toyota.

Dome light, radio, and dash clock all fixed with a new 7.5A fuse. Love it when fixes are easy!

A.T. Temp light stays on upon startup, suggesting an electrical issue. Will get under the truck when I have some time this week to check the sensor connection. Employing Mud search mode this evening to figure it out, have an electronic copy of the FSM to get me started.

Well sh*t. GROSS POLLUTER. BOO...

I have to say this wasn't entirely unexpected. The truck runs pretty rich, and I'm sure there's plenty of stuff that's been neglected over the years. First step is to look at the easy things - EGR solenoid, fuel pressure regulator, and new spark plugs. I'll also pull the EGR off and check that it's working, clean it, clean out the passage in the intake, and then reassess. If that doesn't do it, then it's on to rebuilding injectors and a new catalytic converter. I might do that anyway just to get them done, but want to be more methodical rather than just chuck parts at it. Fortunately the cat doesn't seem too expensive for this rig, and rebuilding injectors would probably do a lot to smooth out the idle.

It did pass the CA evap test, so that's a positive.

Oil leaks from the valve cover and pushrod cover are both pretty gnarly, so that needs to be addressed either before or after smog. Good news about doing injectors is that it makes it all the easier to get that valve cover off. I could have done it with the FJ40 in like 10 minutes, this looks like an hour or more of BS before you get that stupid thing off the engine. Ugh.

I coulda told you Jamie Raskin was a gross polluter ...

:rimshot:

Looks like Air Injection needs work, and perhaps CATs if they're original or old...

Tune up and valve adj...

How's the smog pump ?

Maybe someone has a pdf copy of the 3F-E Emissions Manual, ERM045E ? I've personally never seen one, though.

Great truck! Definitely time to check over all the emissions systems. The FSM covers it all just great.
Any check engine lights?

Have you priced CATs in Kalifornia lately?

Thanks! It has just the right amount of wear, I think.

No CELs to speak of. I will need to brush up on my OBD1 skills and flashing light counting to see if there are any codes. I have an electronic copy of the FSM but prefer physical, will have to shop for one over the weekend.

It can definitely use a valve adjustment, a fair amount of clackety-clacking coming from the valvetrain and who knows when it was done last. Nothing in the records suggests it has. Easy peasy when replacing that valve cover gasket...after tearing apart half the engine. 3FE Life, I guess.

Cat is a replacement but very old, so that is on the list too. Will have to check the smog pump, but it's there and appears to be doing its job. Will run the motor and pull off one of the lines to check for air flow. Air injectors look new-ish.

I am leaning toward the idea of going all-in and doing the injectors and cat along with the rest of this stuff. I won't be receiving the fuel pressure regulator for a few weeks, so it may just make sense to start the teardown and get those injectors out for a rebuild now.

It's like $250 for a Magnaflow Commie-fornia spec cat, apparently there are two. Install could be more since the old one is welded in but I haven't looked too closely yet. Looks like most of the manifold-back exhaust is available new, either OEM or aftermarket, except for that center Y-pipe.

That's a good price if it's real CARB approved

Here’s a question.. if it’s a Fed-spec rig but I’m in CA, do I need to get a CA-spec cat or can I get one for a Fed-spec rig like the rest of the exhaust and emissions system?

It seems that parts houses can’t or won’t sell anything but a CA-spec cat to CA residents. I heard / thought that every CA-spec cat is numbered and registered with the state, but that could be a rumor.

Y-pipe looks ok here, but the downpipes and cats are a rusty mess. I can do the cats and downpipes myself, since cat back looks ok.

There's no CA/Fed spec for these trucks - they're all 50-State emissions compliant. Kaif has mandated (and made it retroactive) that all CATs are OBD II compliant. Your truck is OBD I

The smog tech is 'supposed' to crawl under the truck and check for a CARB number. Some do, some don't, since it's just a visual inspection they can simply check-off.

However, since this is an out-of-State vehicle, you might be able to get away with saying the CATs were installed in Vermont, or Connecticut or ... ?

Trouble is getting the 48-State version, and saving yourself $$$. The FED version is the exact same as the CA/NY version, btw, the extra cost is because you're paying the smog-nazi-socialist tax, plus the scarcity of CATs due to out-of-control CAT theft, which means more theft as the value of these increases. Brilliant.

If you have family or someone who will buy/ship a 48-State version to you, great. You won't find ANY Retailer who will ship into Kalif since the fines/risks are so large.

FWIW, if you need the two downpipes that come off the exhaust to the CATs, I have a L & R aftermarket pair I bought accidently, thinking they would work for a 3F manifold. They won't. 3F-E only.

I'm in SFV

Smog guy says: “Call the BAR.” Ugh.

May take you up on the downpipes if I can find a direct fit CARB-compliant set of cats… doubting this will happen but worth a shot.
