We lived with a H42 behind a 3FE for a couple of decades. It'll be fine but the H55F is fine ++.

Such a bummer on this.

Although looks like some good will come out of it.

Any chance you have an extra transfer case from all your adventures?

I could lighten your load and fund some future projects on this thing.

FJ60 in the sig line is an '86, so if you use this H42 you'll be set up to swap in a H55F later without any drama. The later H42s had the spacer between the transmission and t-case, same configuration as the H55F.
Yep, July '86:

Has ~177K on it and yes, the new H55 was essentially just a bolt on.

A non-resolution resolution...
Well, while not the resolution I was hoping for, I really wanted to help someone down the road with a solution other than, "put a manual in it". However, it appears that in this case, that IS the solution,

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting this mess and to those who have stepped up here and via calls and PM's.

I also really want to reiterate how supportive Georg @orangefj45 has and continues to be. The man is truly a gem. Spend money at his place.

Back to work, I'll check in later.

Been following this a bit over the last week and just got caught up. Glad @zeeklafreek & @RevISK are working out a solution ... even if it wasn't the originally desired solution. Luckily H42s are tough little nuggets and should give ya years of service Ian.

Naturally I wanted to install a manual in the first place, but I also didn’t want to plow through a second auto transmission either. Would’ve been nice to enjoy the work for awhile.

I will have a bit of an uphill battle getting this thing swapped over either way, but thanks to Christian @zeeklafreek I’m off to a solid start.

Unfortunately I only own the one going back in this truck. The other one I have belongs to my friend.

I’ll keep my ear out though. Looks like you got yourself a new tranny though?

I'd guess the only way an auto goes back in your rig is to move it on down the road to someone new...

I am interested in how you pull the trans. I need to R&R my RMS, but am wary of a massive struggle...

Last time I pulled it (a mere few weeks ago) was via my good friend Jimmy’s @CenTXFJ60 help, tools and lift. Probably going to get a lot more crunches in this round.

If you’re doing your RMS plan on your oil pan gasket at the same time. Pile on the suck.

I appreciate the words… I’m pretty deflated.

No one involved is trying to shirk any responsibility at this point. I spoke with Rodney for about 1/2 hour today after the stuff hit the spinny thing and he’s at a loss but isn’t willing to admit it’s not his VB.
Then there’s Georg, the man is a saint… and I’m a reverend so I should know.

I will say this, after two transmissions in as many months there is no way I’d put an auto back in here. While I can’t afford it and actually spent money I didn’t really have to put this auto in, I’d be crazy to do it again. Because after all, what’s the definition of insanity?
That’s right, doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

As I for now I’m 200 miles from home with a rolling brick. Had it towed it to friends rental house that has somewhat secure parking. Made it back to my lodging and am trying not to suck down the beer too hard.

I picked the wrong year to quit smoking…

Man I feel for ya.

For what it’s worth, you picked a great year to stop smoking. Any year you pick to do yourself a favor that big is the perfect year to do it.

Besides, the less you spend burning money, the more landcruiser parts you can buy. Just think, an H55f is only 650 packs of smokes. You’re almost half way there!

I hope you catch a break. Keep at keeping at it.

I *just* finished replacing the trans, Mark's Off Road rebuilt transfer, RMS, clutch, all those goodies on the 40. Am not looking forward to the same on the 62 just to deal with a little oil leak.. Mostly worried about the heavy a$$ bus A440F and how to pull it (safely?) alone in the garage with no lift.

Go get the Harbor Freight Transmission jack, the bigger one. With the HF jack I pulled the a440f with t-case attached by myself, I had never pulled a tranny before (damn...glad I didn't say that in Chat). Also stabbed the new 5 speed with t-case attached with the HF jack, first time for that too.
All on the garage floor. Hard part was jacking up one side of the rig high enough to roll the chunk out from under it.

This is most certainly the route I’ll be going though I’ll have to add the twist of doing it on plywood maybe 🤫. My garage is the house hold junk drawer with a workshop in there somewhere and my only other cement is a shop slab with a partially disassembled airstream on it. Suppose this might be the motivation to get rid of that thing though.

My thought is to get it high enough to at least sit under. We’ll see.

I was trying to save for the bits to dive into my 40 as it’s clutch is slipping pretty good, the idea being to daily the 62 and 40 while giving my truck a bit of a break as I really can’t afford a New car.

First step is to get “Paul, The Eater of Transmissions” home and tucked away then collect what I can.

Trying on a new hat the other day.

Happy to help. I know it's not the outcome you were after and there's a load of disappointment but I'm actually excited/curious to see how Paul takes to the H42. I know that's a bit selfish of me but nice to know a bit BB is being reused for a good cause. Of course, you'll be posting pics of the process, yes?

Ha ha, sure thing.

I was just thinking how I’d like to determine what went wrong with this transmission, get any relevant feedback from Rodney and/or Georg and post all of that as a cautionary tale. Hopefully to help someone down the line.
I’ve definitely wondered if something we did or didn’t do when installing this thing that contributed to its demise, I’ve been assured not but as of now, it seems to still be on the table.

I will likely either start a thread for the swap or continue in my Paul thread. Not sure what makes more sense.

You don't really want to get the frame high enough to sit under; once it's high enough to clear the transmission on the jack, it'll be a pain to reach up and get the top stuff connected. Any higher is a real PITA.

Word of advice: bolt the transfer on before you slide the transmission under the frame.
