I really enjoyed meeting CD and his son last week. I could have spent all day talking about Land Cruisers.

CD was surprised at the weight of the bell housing. It has less mass then the 2F housing.

Yeah, CD is a hell of a good dude and quickly becoming a solid friend. I am fortunate in that for sure. You've got me beat though because I have yet to meet his son's...

Any opinions on this? It goes all the way through.

I don't know if that could be repaired. Maybe able to grind it out and weld back up.

If it breaks you either have the shift lever come off or have pieces fall into the transmissions. Is that top cover on a 4 speed or from a 5 speed? I have only seen steel top covers on the 4 speeds.

It’s a top cover from an H42f.
Being cast, I’ll probably JB weld it, maybe try locate the end and drill a relief hole and plug it with JB.

It’s in a strange spot, don’t really understand what stresses could’ve caused it.

Maybe the shifter got slammed

H42 top cover? a replacement should be readily available on the used market for not much money

How do the locating pins on the base of the shift cane look? I’ve seen some that were trashed, and they damaged the slots in the top of the cover where they sit.

Yeah, you don’t want bits falling into the gears. I could probably peel off the one from my spare H42 - cheaper than sending the whole dang thing. Kind of turns my spare transmission into a paperweight, but as we’re finding out these things tend to come back around when you need them.

Ok, I’ve got good news. I don’t think this is a crack after all. I think they are casting marks. When I saw them last night it was pretty dark and I thought I was seeing them on both sides and jumped to conclusions. Other than dirty, this transmission will be just fine.

Thanks again @zeeklafreek, when I picked it up, Danny unloaded a bunch of parts for the swap. He’s an awesome guy.

**definitely casting marks**
Yep. Although I just found 2F intake of mine that looked like for sure it had a casting mark in the bottom under the carb … and was definitely a crack. Aluminum can be weird like that.

you can always do a die penetrant test to be sure.

Agree with the above - definitely casting marks. My brand new H55F has them too

Crossmember
Hi.

Almost there gathering components.
I’m thinking I need to start a dedicated thread for the swap, yeah? Or take it back to my original Paul thread?

What’s the consensus?

What I meant to post/ask is do we think that the repositioned crossmember will be stymied by these steps/sliders? Anyone have a measurement handy? To where on the frame the manual transmission crossmember lands? These things are welded on, but poorly so that’s nice 🙄.

Looks to be plenty of room. What is that round rod looking thing off the back of the transmission mounting point?
