Oh snap y’all! Look what showed up today! So excited to try these new fangled bump stops from @PerryParts on the 40. As far as I’m aware this is the first set for a 40. Standby for fit up and testing!

Is that not a lot of stop? Asking for a friend…
Haha. It is a lot. But, it’s better than the shock being the bump stop. There’s not a lot of up-travel with this shock on this small lift.

Gotcha. Just learning myself here.
I’ve got the bilstein 5100 shocks, with I’d guess a 2 1/2” lift and the OG bump stops. Worked for me at roundup last year. I guess. I’m not a big wheeler so, what do I know?

I’m certainly no expert or big wheeler either for that matter. I’ve been out in the rocks a dozen or so times and I’ve done a fair number of trails in other rigs so I know a little bit I suppose. Just really going off of what I’ve read here and there. My hope is that it’s insurance against prematurely destroying my new bilsteins.

To be brutal, you are going to hate the bone jarring ride when it hits the bump stops on every undulating surface and blame the wrong thing or damage something.

Rule of thumb is to jack up a side to full stuff(compression), measure the distance between the axle and frame and then add a bump stop which is 1/2" or more longer than the measured distance. If you must use them, cut the long bump stops to the right height. Those long 8mm bolts can put a ton of side load on the captive nut also, so beware of that.

Conversely, too long a shock can under sustained full articulation allow the spring to flex beyond its design parameters, thereby bending a spring (usually main leaf).

I mean this all well and hope it is taken as constructive criticism.

I appreciate the advice @locklaw. I was looking for similar advice earlier in this thread actually. I seem to have a shock length conundrum here.

I did cycle the springs to full compression using my floor jack and took measurements. My droop and compression numbers using that method landed me right between the two shock length options in the 5100s. Essentially the shorter length shocks were too short on droop and the longer shocks are too long on compression. I opted for the longer shocks. It’s entirely possible I did something wrong in my measuring or I opted for the wrong option here. I’d love to hear your input.

I’m definitely here to learn and teach others where possible. I also don’t want a s***ty riding 40.

Happy to help. Unless you are going to wheel it, just measure for bump stop length as I wrote above and your shocks and springs should be fine.

I do plan on wheeling it a bit. Nothing too crazy. Maybe blue or green slopes.

The two shock length options leave me with either too much or too little travel. The short ones are too short and the long are too long…

Switching gears again here…

Got the necessary parts I was missing from the oil filter canister. Opted for a quick and dirty solution from Home Depot. I decided a piece of 1/2” conduit would work just fine for the spacer. Thought I was going to have to purchase a whole stick of conduit until I found this little curved piece.

A little slice and dice and some grinding and voila!

Turns out the o-ring on the bottom won’t be an issue ever… Thanks PO.

And done! Maybe someday I’ll clean it up with the rest of the engine bay.

Catching up from the past few weeks. Been crazy busy with buying a new house and prepping the old house to sell on top of finishing up things with the 40 in preparation for Roundup.

And of course going to Roundup and having a blast in the 40 this past weekend.

Made some more permanent latch plates via sendcutsend.com for the NOS Kayline doors I got from @davegonz.

Nice work! Sendcutsend is a great resource.

Unexpectedly scored a winch cable for my 8274 from my friend Todd via my cousin. Got it secured and wrapped on the drum with zero fuss. That’s ~$200 saved!

You should make another set with a beer bottle opener function. :)

Another belated update: Land Cruiser Roundup! Decided to trailer the forty to Roundup because my young son wanted to go for the whole weekend with me rather than come up with momma for one night of camping. Also, I was itching to tow with my new-to-me Tundra. Borrowed my cousins trailer and loaded up! Caravanning out there with friends again was another bonus I don’t take for granted. It’s always a bit disconcerting to look up and see a vehicle so close.

Camp! Got to Katemcy just in time to set up camp and get settled before the sun set. Todd has a sweet little home built RTT military trailer. Rest of us popped standard cheap person tents on the trailer that I hauled the forty in on. Good to be back.

Woke up and grabbed some breakfast from the concession stand. Big-as-your-face breakfast burritos and coffee for all!

Gave my son his first driving lesson in 4-low and first gear on the way to breakfast. He had fun but he was definitely nervous and unsure. Going to have to make that a more regular occurrence when we’re out on the trails. He’s definitely not like his old man in that respect. I was trying to drive anything and everything since before I could walk.

Hit the trails after breakfast. First stop, the phallic rock of course. And obligatory poser shots because we can.

Boys were having a blast exploring the cool rock formations in this part of the beautiful Texas hill country.
