Found my 66 FSM and what appears to be a very rough owners manual in the correct range.
Wiring diagram for 66. lists for 40/43/45 both RHD and LHD. Shows a courtesy light with a switch

Interesting it does not list any courtesy light only interior lights for the FJ40 only for a hard top. Does not list any interior light for the FJ43. 43 were all soft top which probably means soft tops during this time did not have any interior light.

For the record the 40 and 45 interior lights are labeled backwards.

All pictures for the dash are for RHD 40s
It does show FJ40 (L). In 1975 R to the model number except in Japanese domestic market which a R was never added.
Courtesy light switch on RHD.

Not sure where it is on LHD but it did have a switch. Wiring diagram shows the wire does come from the head light switch.
When the vent in the windshield frame ended it moved to the cowl. The control knob was in the dash. 68 model had a lower dash pad and the control knob moved below the dash.

No mention of a windshield frame vent confirms the dash of the manual.

I have a non-Toyota manual and in the electrical diagram, it also shows the courtesy light and respective switch. So, multiple things I've learned....The "Vader" light I have is not the original one, and most likely not even the correct Toyota one (from looking at pics of what others have posted), and the hole on the underside of the dash is much too large for the Vader light I have, indication it's not the correct one. So, the hole in my dash where the light was mounted was mostly likely put there by a P.O. Also, after looking up under the dash, I noticed that one of the wires coming off of the multi-position main light switch has a small section of insulation stripped off, so guessing that my "Vader" light was connected there at one point, coming on automatically when the headlights are turned on. Someone else on this thread stated that that's how some were wired, so that would make sense.

Think I've read there is an old motorcycle license plate light that looks like that. Possibly a Harley Davidson. Believe I have an cowl off a 61 that may have one. Never had any interest in it.

What I find interesting is haven't found anything the in old manuals showing the courtesy light that reminds people of Darth Vader's helmet. Personally think it looks more like Robbie the Robot from the movie Forbidden Planet.

Time to dig deeper in to older owners manuals.

That is not the correct light. The Vader light started before 66 and last thru 73 at least. Prior to the 68 model without a padded dash could possibly see a Vader light going on the dash in that location if it had the factory heater with the control bracket mounted to the bottom of the dash. Padded dash would cover that area.

Let me dig out my 66 FSM and see what I can find. Never owned a 66/67 and had no interest in parts from them. Originally was looking for newer parts for my 68. Later looked for FJ25 and early FJ40.parts.

1963 FJ45. Not sure if switch is for light.

it is located in the location of the pic above on my mid-66 build year. And also as noted I think, I have a factory heater and the vent control panel so it blocks where the light would go but is still stamped for it. Nothing else along the bottom of the dash or on the front.

Was thinking my truck was missing the light but this is how my '67 is, hole under that is blocked by the heater but no hole in the dash. I never even knew that hole was under there. Glad I don't need to find a vader light!
