Got the floor pan burned in, inside and out.
Still a few loose ends to take care of before moving on to the driver side. Test fit the front tub mounts. There’s a couple issues going on that have me at a halt. I can hack them up to make them work, or build a set.

Just ruined a fine pair of shorts and took some hide off of my inner leg with my grinder. Was kneeling down using a portion of Rickety as a bench to make a quick grind when the backing pad touched an upright and kicked out of my hand and into my crotchal region. Here’s the shorts, I’ll spare you any other inappropriate pics.

What a day. 7pm just seems to come waay too soon. It always feels like I should have gotten more done even though I worked on it pretty much all day.

This morning started off with me hacking into the passenger side tub mount, to see what I could do to make it work. There’s several issues going on, and there’s this balance to make it all work the way I want it to work. In the end what I want is the mount bolt hole to be centered through the mount (not offset to the rear like the factory). The BobM mount is a simplified version of the factory mount, with a continuous 3” width and a continuous slope from outside inwards. The floorpan doesn’t sit flat, but slopes upwards towards the hump opening. The angle line in the pan that transitions the flat portion of floorboard to the angle that leads to the firewall, also runs at a couple degrees of incline from the kick panel (lower A-Pillar) to the tranny opening. Nothing straight, nothing simple, everything oddball. Throw in custom replacement sheetmetal (that attempts to simplify the factory hodgepodge), previous repair work, and sky-high ideals - there’s gonna be some work to do.

So, first I hacked the downturn that attaches to the inside rocker sheetmetal (that I don’t have)

Then hacked off about 3” of the end

The difference between the shortened version and the original size.

Cut off the front facing transition and welded scraps on to get the proper angles.

Made a cut along the rear face to allow the seat to contact the floorboard and welded gap. About 1/4”.

Planning on plating around the mount hole and building an insert made of pipe that will attach to the floorboard and tub mount. That will come at a later time.

So I went ahead and cut out the driver floorboard.

Got some time in today cleaning up the driver side kick panel/lower A-Pillar area. Should be a repeat of the passenger side, so I’ll probably keep pics to a minimum. Was surprised to see how much cleaner the channel was inside than the passenger - almost zero rust. The old patch cleaned off nicely so should go together pretty simple with some CAD.

Been doing a lot of cleaning on the outer firewall and the tub floors. Starting to see some nice changes - really enjoying this part of the process. Except for grinding through my epidermis with an 50 grit sanding pad. Not really enjoying that much.

Pass side must get all the road debris, always seems worse on old cars.

Got with it on this patch job today.
So in addition to the usual update, I also want to expand a bit on what I’m using before painting with the zinc primer an welding pieces in place. I picked up a basic surface prep, wax and grease remover, and these lint-free prep towels. After sanding each piece down with my angle-head, I get it as clean as possible with the surface prep and towels, going over it several times until nearly nothing shows on the cloth. Then I’ll go ahead and prime it. The cleaning step is probably the most important for good adhesion. You gotta go through this process many times throughout a paint job.

I am constantly amazed how often the prep step is skipped, especially in manufacturing...tons of powder coated crap with a failing finish out there due to lack of prep.

Driver side floor pan burned in. Not too bad for gaps. Still have a little chasing to do, and installing the side supports coming up from the rocker side, but this part is almost done
