Unfortunate timing for my leg 10/2 to 10/8. That is the weekend of Yankee Toys Fall Gathering, and I will be there this year. I hope that most everyone else in the area would be there as well.

I would suggest the baton be passed at Fall Gathering, Hancock, NH, and rides in multiple 40's for the weekend. Opens 10/7, closes 10/9. Maybe one of the RI folks can pick up 10/2 and One of the NY folks can transport south after the event.

Shipping these days is cheap

The one case I was thinking about is 30couple dollars on flea bay.
I would have no problem getting it and seeing to it finding it's way to the designated starting point.
There have been a few suggestions for batons.
I'll start a separate thread this evening to get feed back on the items.

Brian

I'm picturing the briefcase ending up like a steamer trunk, getting plastered with stickers along the way: club stickers, stickers from eateries along the way, frosty beverage product placements.

So make sure it's not alligator skin.:p

OK! Missed that one. I moved all of the dates one week later... that way we get a few of the 40's in the Gathering to participate!

Is it possible to do my portion during the week? I see a gap between @brian picking up in NYC and the drop off in Maryland of a week? Maybe Brian, Gary and I will work this out.. I'm a lot closer to NYC than Brian is

Absolutely! I just assumed weekends for most... knowing that it was not going to be the case for all... so, work it out and then let me know of your agreement.

Is there a leg running through new Orleans then in to Mississippi? Oct 2 is the start of Cruisin The Coast it's from Bay st. Louis to Ocean Springs all along the coast here is a link.

I am I. Vacation that week and I will be attending the whole week it is a short stretch but you have the coast and over 7000 classic cars

I'm good on organizing the Long Island part. I will be at the fall gathering and my Long Island buddy Rich will be there in his 40.
It would be molto convenient to get it on the way home at the end of the event rather than having to figure it out a week later.

Agree 100%... I'll hand it off to you while we're all there in NH... awesome!!!

I'm in the DC 'burbs so I'm in for a pick up in MD somewhere. The route shows a path down the Eastern Shore of MD and VA. That may not be feasible even though it'd be a fun trip. @Shark56 - How close can you get the baton to DC? @Booch - Can you meet me out around Charlottesville or closer to Skyline Drive?

It looks like this is going to take a lot longer to traverse the continent than I initially thought. If this ends up being extended for as long as it needs to then why not do a single run, down in to Florida then back and hit the orange route. I can see this taking 4-5 months to actually complete.

I could make my run to Vernon, Electra, or Wichita Falls; anywhere that suits your comfortable distance.

The good thing about 287 is that so much of it is four lanes divided highway now, so we wouldn't be holding up traffic or unsafe plodding along in the right lane.

@1911, I can get it across the Metroplex to you in Parker County.

I can get it to DC area very easily.
If im thinking correctly isnt that weekend, 22nd, the Fall Crawl weekend?

I think we're good on the money front for now. We can address larger expenses (e.g. the stickers) collectively as time goes on...

OK... so here's the first pass at a schedule, but first, some qualifiers:
  • This is just an initial draft, which takes into account your initial proposals on distance / direction, which I selectively adjusted to make it work.
  • This assumes that every section of the leg will take place over a weekend... I of course expect several adjustments to this assumption.
  • If the distance does not work, let me know
  • If the direction does not work, let me know
  • If the proposed date does not work, let me know! :)
  • The proposed route is of course a placeholder... each of you will determine the final route you will take to your destination.
  • I'm assigning names, but this is not meant to be exclusive... anyone that wants to jump in should feel free to do so! We'll just have to communicate...
  • I'll integrate all input and present you with a revised schedule on Sunday.

I'm proposing two Legs to start simultaneously, one from Maine down to Key West (in blue below), following the coast... mostly, joining the 2nd Leg in Northern Florida. The 2nd Leg (in orange below) will kick-off in Michigan, also down to Key West through OH (and IN???), KY, TN (AL?) and GA.

Now on to the tentative schedule:

1st Leg - Maine to Key West
  1. Saturday October 8th - @vt0u812 (Central Vermont), @JohnnyC (Upstate New York), and @hecrod (Boston) meet in Portland Maine to kick off the Expedition!
  2. Sunday October 9th - @hecrod (Boston) hands off baton to @Cruiser_Nerd (CT) during Yankee Toys Fall Gathering in Southern NH
  3. Saturday October 15th - @woytovich collects the baton from @Cruiser_Nerd in CT.
  4. Sunday October 16th - @woytovich leads the Long Island entourage  (@woytovich, would you take the Lead in coordinating the Long Island Leg?) into NYC (specific location TBD). @brian collects the baton. @wizjim25 and @awynne56 can also travel here from the Jersey Coast. @RolandFJ40 and @shmukster... we will have to figure out a way to loop you into this weekend. Let me know of your preference.
  5. Saturday October 22nd - @Shark56 collects the baton from @brian in Northern Maryland.
  6. Sunday October 23rd - @Booch and @iptman collect the baton from @Shark56 in Southern Virginia (Norfolk?) or Northern NC.
  7. The baton continues South into Charleston SC during the week (I assume @Booch will do this?). It would be great to loop in @David1947 at some point in this section of the Leg.
  8. Saturday October 29th - @Booch meets @ErikinSC, @77wagon and @CharlestonG8R in Charleston SC. @Booch can of course, if needed, leave the baton with @CharlestonG8R at anytime during the week.
  9. Sunday October 30th - @CharlestonG8R (and others?) heads towards St. Augustine Florida to meet @sggoat, @Captn Conch and @mel lowe. @sggoat and @Captn Conch are coming South from Atlanta, where they have collected the "Michigan baton".
  10. @sggoat and @Captn Conch determine final timing down to Key West.

2nd Leg - Michigan to Key West
  1. Weekend of October 8th - @olive gives us a tour of MI, IN and parts of OH??? :D:D:D
  2. Saturday October 15th - @Speeter collects the baton from @olive , maybe somewhere near Columbus?
  3. Sunday October 16th - @Speeter hands the baton to @Bluegrass40 near Louisville KY. It'd be great to loop in @mtnbiker4evr13 at some point here...
  4. Saturday October 22nd - @Bluegrass40 hands the baton to @Tennessee80 near Nashville.
  5. Sunday October 23rd - @Tennessee80 hands the baton to @Cleg near Knoxville, TN
  6. Saturday October 29th - @Cleg hands the baton to @GA Architect and @Chris8760 near Atlanta. @Sig191144 maybe you can meet the folks near Atlanta as well?
  7. Sunday October 30th - @GA Architect and @Chris8760 hand the baton to @sggoat and @Captn Conch somewhere in Southern GA. These guys head South towards St. Augustine FL to meet @CharlestonG8R.
  8. @sggoat and @Captn Conch determine final timing down to Key West.

So, what I need from all of those listed as participants is:
  1. Confirmation that you will be part of the Leg, and
  2. Feedback on whether timing / distance works or needs to be adjusted
Again, I'll provide an updated version of the Plan on Sunday... but everyone should assume this is happening soon!:beer::beer:

Two more things:
  1. This does not preclude a West to East Leg.... but timing is of the essence
  2. @brian of course... this means we need at least two batons... the briefcase, and??? One baton will need to be shipped to @olive, the other to @vt0u812 (or @JohnnyC or me). Let me know of your thoughts on how to handle expenses here.

Would love to join in somewhere on the Charleston to St. Augustine leg. I'm in Brunswick, Ga. just off of Hwy. 17 and just got my first 40. If someone can let me know when you pass through here, I will join up on Sunday the 30th for part of the ride if that's okay.

Conch can't do that see my post towards the end of page 12.

I should be good that week. I'll get with the guys below and work out the itinerary.
  1. Saturday October 29th - @Cleg hands the baton to @GA Architect and @Chris8760 near Atlanta. @Sig191144 maybe you can meet the folks near Atlanta as well?
  2. Sunday October 30th - @GA Architect and @Chris8760 hand the baton to @sggoat and @Captn Conch somewhere in Southern GA.

Nice to see a plan come together! Great job @hecrod
