which carpet kit have you guys found to be the best? My rig is a 71 FJ40. Better in terms of fit, look, and sound deadening.

I put carpet in my FJ55, but when I put carpet in the 40, it was a disaster. Water, mold, etc.

I put down some heat/sound deadening material and a molded rubber mat. I really like it. I cant recall which vendor I used but the the heat barrier was pre-cut and fit very well. The rubber mat was good, not great. It doesnt fit the tranny hump as well as I would like. As @ginmtb suggested I would wait and see what @Racer65 makes. I am sure it will be top notch.

You might want to wait for this... :)

Yeah hurry up @Racer65!

Believe these are for the 73-78 FJ40s. 73 and early 74 with a three the shifter holes will be off a little and the wrong shape. The 72 and earlier had the 40/60 bench seats. Transmission cover is not as tall will many having column shift.

My 70 FJ40 has loose fitting carpet. No rust issues as I park it in a garage. It's also low enough humidity so if it does get wet it can breath and dry. I like the rubber floor mats but if moisture gets trapped under it it will not dry that quick as carpet that can breath. If you can keep moisture from getting underneath rubber is better. Carpet with rubber floor mats is the worst. The pads used between the tub and gas tank was felt not rubber. If you live in a dusty area or get dirt and mud in your cruiser it still requires pulling and cleaning under the gas tank to keep the channels clear to the drain in the center.

Will the hump shape pose an issue for the pre-73 trucks? I don't think the shifter holes is a concern, since you get to make your own cutouts.

I'd like to invite you and others to post pictures of the floors, humps, and especially the footwell areas of earlier models, including FJ45s. I'm interested to see to what extent the variations may affect the fit of this reproduction floor mat. I don't want to hijack this thread, so feel free to post in the Unobtainium thread instead.

The transmission hump is smaller on the 72 and older. 73 grew because it had a four speed in some markets. Not a H41 or H42 but a earlier four speed. I posted pictures of different transmission humps in this thread Help save a virgin! Cut trans tunnel needed for FJ45 middle picture in post thirteen shows how much shorter the earlier hump is.

Not the best pictures of my 70 FJ40 but the best I can do right now.

I have used a 74-78 four speed mat in my 68 that wasn't in great shape. Trimmed the back where the tool box i on the driver's side. But I installed buckets from a 74 and modified a transmission hump from a 76.

I like carpet, it holds dirt rather than letting it roll into a corner of some tough to get to spot. I keep an eye it with moisture. I just went to home Depot, got a chunk of outdoor carpet and cut it to fit. The front piece is 3piece for ease of removal to let dry out or clean.

With no floor shifter the my front carpet just pulls out. My back piece only covers the floor and requires removing the the two bolts for the rear heater.

Thanks for the reply. Great thread on the different humps. After looking at the photos, it appears the floor mat should work for the earlier trucks as well. Maybe just some cutting of the tail section. Even the foot well looks the same, except I can't tell what the foot well looks like for cars with bench seat.

Thanks y'all. Lots to think about. I might be after a good sound deadener, not carpet.
