What is your toe-in setting? Another thing to consider is tire pressure. To much pressure and you are only riding on the center of the tread which will make it feel loose. As an example, with my 33x12.5-15's, I run 17 PSI rear and 21 PSI...
You might like a little bit more of toe-in with larger tires. I'm closer to 1/4" with 37s.
You can get pretty close with just a tape measure and some chalk.
It's been a while but pretty sure I used a portable bandsaw. Cutting wheel or even a hacksaw would also work. I believe I laid out the cut lines with painters tape.
Don't remove the braces, trim them instead.
Drill a hole at the corner and then trim/cut up to it. You want a rounded corner to prevent stress cracks from forming. Don't cut the frame or bumper.

What year is your FJ-40? As you mentioned, the ring gear in my '73 FJ-40 has a stud going through the ring gear and flange and is held in place with a nut as in this build.
you should be in good shape, those used existing rivet holes to be fastened on. remove the bits and line up the holes in the frame and oe brackets and have at it.
