Pulled prepped painted battery "box" and frame support. Put carburator back together...hope to reinstall The day (fingers crossed my rebuild does the job).
Pulled distributor cap to replace points? I ordered from SOR for a 1979 but they are not even close (see pictures). Any idea as to what I should get for mine?

No points in a '79 distributor. But the "points" cover on the fender is from a '78 through '80 distributor. Can you post a photo or two with the distributor cap off?Pulled prepped painted battery "box" and frame support. Stop bumming the guy out already and give him a price on an exchange distributor that will solve his problem. The distributor looks very crusty inside, the signal generator (pickup coil) has seen better days. You can see if it's still working by unplugging the connector and checking the resistance at the two wire terminals with a digital multimeter, it should read between 100 and 200 ohms. And I doubt the vacuum advance is working, the stationary plate looks to be rusted inside the races.
It could probably be refurbished. I have new Toyota breaker plate parts, new aftermarket signal generators, and new NipponDenso vacuum advancers that can be modified to work.So what's my best solution? Rebuild or replace? And with what?
If it were me I'd investigate rebuilding the one you have.So what's my best solution? Rebuild or replace? And with what?

Think that's what I'm going to do... If the carb. Rebuild is a success. If not might just order non US spec carb and distributor from City Racer. I'ld rather try to keep all original parts McKenzie (my FJs nameIf it were me I'd investigate rebuilding the one you have.
I should have the parts you need.Think that's what I'm going to do...
I’m trying to keep mine as original as I can too. I’m trying to find a 1979 thermostat housing for a 40 with an oil cooler. It looks like an oddball part. I think it was only used for a couple of years.@Badad I’m in the same boat I’m trying to keep mine original too, or as close as possible. I was lucky enough to find a carburetor to rebuild that’s the same month/year as my cruiser. You can do it.. it’s just harder. Lol
